  • A Teen's Take

POMEROY–Law enforcement is a career I think I would like to pursue because it helps people and communities. When I tell people I am interested in this field, they ask me why I would consider such a thing. I think careers like police officer and teacher are so under-appreciated, but so very vital to betterment of life. When a person works in one of these areas, they impact lives by changing them or saving them. In school last year for our English final, we were asked to do a slideshow p...

POMEROY–Christmas is right around the corner which means "no School" and I am super excited. Being a teen around the holidays can be somewhat stressful when you have to shop for your parents without getting caught and finding out what they're getting. Plus, the whole "shopping for your siblings" thing is pretty hard. My brother likes to know what he's getting so I have to hide his gifts really well. Christmas traditions are the best though. I like the little unplanned things we do the most b...

POMEROY–The summer before I went into third grade, my parents got a divorce. I thought my world was over. I cried all the time. Honestly, my little brother was there for me the most and he was only like six. I remember that a couple of other kids in my class parents were going through divorce right around the same time. We talked a lot about the pros and cons. Like having two Christmases and two birthdays. It is both a pro and a con. The best thing is being able to share these special times of y...

POMEROY–Little siblings are good and bad. One minute they can be your best friend and the next, your worst nightmare. It’s the epitome of a love-hate relationship. When I was about ten and my brother was eight, my mom got us tablets and our favorite thing to do was make houses on Minecraft. In the houses, we could design our own bedrooms to match our own personality, wants and needs. When we were younger, we didn’t always see eye-to-eye, in fact we had disagreements which lead to bicke...

  • Junior High Boys Basketball News

    KayLee Schmidt|Nov 28, 2019

POMEROY–Jr. Pirates took basketball team was victorious with a 24-32 win when they played Colton last Monday, November 18 at 4:30 p.m. Due to lack of junior varsity and varsity players, only one game was played. Kyzer Herres played tremendously with a score of 17. Jacob Reisinger scored the only three-point basket of the night and an overall score of nine points. Overall, they played a lot scrappier at this game than in the past. I encourage anyone and everyone to come and cheer on our boys a...

POMEROY–When you have a best friend you want to hold on to them for as long as possible. Unfortunately, you can’t always be that lucky. I have a friend who was my other half. We did everything together. Then, she moved away. I still see her and her family sometimes. Just recently she came up for a visit and saw me for my birthday. They will return again around Christmas. I absolutely love seeing her and every time she informs me that she is coming, it makes me so excited. We still fight som...

POMEROY– The Pirates Junior High Basketball games played against the Colfax Bulldogs were tough, which they fought hard but were kept at bay with a Pirate A team loss of 18-54 and B team loss of 14-22 at their second game November 14. The A Team’s leading scorer was Ollie Severs with eight points, Trace Roberts played hard scoring four points and fouling out in the fourth quarter. Ceasar Morphin made three points, which was the only Pirate three point shot for the day. Colby Ledgerwood scored tw...

POMEROY–It seems the older I get the less appealing the whole birthday party with cake, ice cream and candles, party favors and games seem. It takes a lot of planning to get a date and time. These days, my two families find it a challenge to coordinate two separate birthday gatherings because our family has become so involved in work, sports, school and other activities. Tricky. Very tricky. Another thing that has changed with me is that getting gifts are not as big of a deal to me now as it o...

POMEROY–The whole week of Homecoming was absolutely amazing and awesome. Dress-up days were so much fun and being able to be completely silly with all of my friends all week was great. Homecoming morning, I woke up with hives, then one friend was unable to come in on time. I’ve realized that not everything goes to plan even when you do everything right. In the end it all worked out fine because we didn’t stress. To start with, we didn’t do anything formal. My friends and I curled each other’s ha...

POMEROY–Homecoming is almost here! Everyone has expectations of how the week activities and dance are going to be, especially the freshman since it’s their first high school dance. In the movies, it’s this big glamorous thing that everyone fawns overt but, I have a feeling it’s not going to be what that way. I think it’s not even the dance that is the best part, but what comes before and after it. In my group, which is only girls, we are not doing anything formal. Our plan is to order Panda Exp...

POMEROY– Thanks to Muriel Bott, I recently met with some travelers from Finland and spoke with a thirteen-year old girl named Lina Kortejarvi. In our discussion, I learned she was from a village called Askola. I was able to ask her some questions about what it is like to be traveling around the world as a teenager. Lina isn't a whole lot different than me and my friends. Her favorite food is pizza. She plays soccer and likes spending time with her friends. She has two brothers who she said w...

POMEROY–The last couple of years I have changed, partially due to maturing, but also to fit into my peer group. It is sometimes difficult to make the transition into high school where friends, parents, teachers and coaches expect more of me. I have found that my friends want me to be fun and outgoing while my parents want me to get good grades and do my chores. Teachers want me to do my homework and math notes as well as come in early in the morning to get extra help. Coaches want me to try me h...

POMEROY–High school brings on a whole new level of stress to feel accepted. Some people are even changing themselves to be like others. What is so wrong with being yourself, even if that means being a bit different? My mom has said that if everyone was the same, the world would be very boring. A variety of different personalities is what makes the world go around. Honestly, I’m pretty happy with who I am at this moment. My parents are raising me well, I have great friends, and I have com...

POMEROY–Many of you probably have siblings. I have a little brother, and he can be such a pain. It’s a weird thing about having siblings. There are times you want to ship them off in the mail, yet at other times you just can’t wait for them to get home. That’s how I feel about my little brother. It’s weird, I know, but most of the time, I can’t wait for him to come home from football so I can help him with a school assignment or activity. I think the whole “love–hate” relationship thing was insp...
