WASHINGTON D. C.–"Mr. President, our farmers love you!" President Trump looked up, smiled, walked over to me and shook my hand. What a moment! It was the culmination of more than a year's worth of effort, seeking support from legislators in Olympia, our local governments, and especially from our farmers for the proposed United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). I have a deep love for agriculture. From growing up in Idaho, to studying plant science and crop management at the University of I...
WASHINGTON D. C.––Rep. Mary Dye, R-Pomeroy, was among the invited guests at the White House South Lawn who watched President Donald Trump Wednesday as he signed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) into law. The new trade agreement, which was approved by Congress, replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that was established in 1994. Dye, a dryland wheat farmer who represents the largely agricultural 9th Legislative District, is a strong supporter of the new tra...

POMEROY-The Garfield County Sheriff gained a new deputy when Kurt Miller graduated from the law enforcement academy in Spokane, December 13, 2019. He is currently in training with Under Sheriff Danserau until March. He bears a resemblance to a television character in a current series called "The Rookie," being the oldest candidate to graduate in his class at the academy. Coincidentally, that is his favorite show to watch. Miller was born in Idaho Falls and spent his first six years there, but mo...

By Anna Johnson WASHINGTON D. C.–As it works to implement changes to the 2018 farm bill, the U.S. Department of Agriculture continues to accept public comments on its rule addressing the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). EQIP is one of the nation’s largest conservation programs. As of 2018, 13.7 million acres were covered under active and completed EQIP contracts. EQIP helps producers implement conservation practices on their operations that preserve soil, water, and other natural resources. The new EQIP rule includes sev...
Carol’s story is just another glamorous tale of a city girl who married a romantic Nebraska Sandhills rancher years ago and became a ‘vocational COW assistant’ for life. “So what exactly do you want me to do?” she asked. “Take the pickup (she didn’t learn to drive till she was twenty-nine) then go out there to the Big Pasture (the dreaded Big Pasture where one grass covered hill looks like the next one to her). Start way back there at the gate in the Middle Pasture where we have the heifers n...
Welcome to the fourth installment addressing common questions and concerns about the Hospital District. Previously, we discussed moving the clinic to the hospital, issues with provider turnover, and billing issues. If you missed these articles, they can be found on East Washingtonian website, the hospital website, or the hospital Facebook page. This week's discussion will cover turning patients away. There was a brief period in time where the decision was made to stop admitting patients. The...
POMEROY–I truly understand what it feels like to do things for other people and make a big deal over them. Yes, I am polite and open doors for people and give gifts on Christmas, but this week was different. A couple of friends and I took the time to plan a surprise birthday party for my best friend. It took a lot of time to plan. We called her parents to make sure we were okay with the plans, shopping, and discreetly asked about favorites. I was super stressed when the day finally came; we w...

The first wrestling meet of the year and the only home meet that the Jr. High wrestlers got to host this year was January 22. The wrestlers performed very well in front of a large home crowd, with teams including Colfax Jr. High and Sacajawea Jr. High (Lewiston). The wrestlers were very nervous for the first match, but everyone wrestled to the best of their ability, which is all a coach can ask. The outstanding wrestler of the evening, in my opinion, was Jacob Reising, who won all three of his matches by fall. This year’s team is a young t...
The Pirate Jr. High A team played its first games of the season. Due to the weather cancelling early games, we played three games within a week’s time. Our two games next week are home against Colfax on February 3 and at Tekoa against Tekoa/Rosalia on February 6. Our first game was against Colfax. It was a tough first game to start our year as they are a really good team and we were on the road with a lot of our girls playing on the A team for the first time. We lost by the scores of 10-25, 11-25, 10-25 but had some positives to take away f...
Ten Years Ago February 10, 2010 Pomeroy School District’s $4.49 million bond request for modernization of the high school building has apparently passed with 60.77% approval. As of Friday, the count was 581 yes votes to 375 no votes. Cable television customers in Pomeroy will have service discontinued February 22, according to Charter Communications, and apparently there aren’t any measures that can be taken to prevent the service stoppage or restoring cable television service. The city has had problems with collecting the monthly cable utility...
RITZVILLE–Three Pirate wrestlers head to the District 5-6 1B/2B South League Tournament, working to advance to the regional meet and keep the 2019-2020 season going. Pomeroy's Curtis Winona, Braedyn White and Will Winona recently competed, along with Dayton-Waitsburg co-op wrestler Carlos Norris, at a league match in Ritzville. Both White, in the 170 lb. class, and 138-lb. Norris won both of their matches here. Will Winona, in the 182-lb. division, pinned his Lind-Ritzville-Sprague opponent b...
TOUCHET–The tenacious Touchet Indians relented in the second half as the Pirates shot prolifically and capitalized on the rebound put-back for a 55-45 league win here Saturday night. The Buccaneers are now 5-6 in district play, 5-13 on the season, and are in fourth place behind Prescott with an 8-3 record and with Oakesdale and Gar-Pal tied for first with 9-1 records. (The teams meet Feb. 8 in Palouse.) Pomeroy has one more regular-season game against Garfield-Palouse Friday, February 7. “We were able to get a road victory with great eff...
POMEROY–Post-season play is assured for the Lady Pirates and, for the Pirate boys basketball team, the post-season picture is a bit more complicated and would be helped by a season-finale win over Garfield-Palouse. With a win over Gar-Pal this Friday, the Lady Pirates would clinch first place in the Southeast 1B League and would start the playoffs with home-court advantage, playing the number four team on February 14, according to Athletic Director Toddette McGreevy. Barring upsets elsewhere in the league, Gar-Pal is likely to finish fourth a...
POMEROY–During the fourth Camas Prairie shoot, the Pomeroy Gun Club Junior Shooters battled high winds last Saturday and on Sunday, the Senior Club found a snowy background difficult to shoot over. Forty-eight shooters battled the conditions on Sunday and Wayne Tetrick and Robert DesJardin were the only shooters who managed perfect 25s for the weekend. Lee Koller achieved a 24 while Sean Beale, Larry Bunch, Tracy Hanger, Mike Hastings, Buck Geiger, Richard Gittens, and Fred Zack all recorded 23s. Juniors were led by the 23s of Mason Blachly a...
