  • Olympia Update

    Sen. Mark Schoesler|Mar 5, 2020

OLYMPIA–I've seen Democrats raise taxes several times during my many years in the Legislature. They'd increase spending to unsustainable levels, then, when the economy slowed and tax revenues fell, claim tax hikes were necessary to maintain important services. Incredibly, we're now seeing Democrats trying to increase taxes and expand the state operating budget like a balloon even when the state's coffers are stuffed with money. When state government's first quarterly revenue forecast for 2020 w...

  • On the Edge of Common Sense

    Baxter Black|Mar 5, 2020

“Boys will be boys,” reflected Jack, as he told me a story from his youth. Seems when Jack was a teenager back in Ripley, Oklahoma, he and his teenage friend were serious about becoming bull riders. They had helped fix up the local rodeo arena and that gave them chute privileges. One week they replaced a chute gate. They had made the replacement themselves out of oilfield pipe, painted it and hung it up. As they were admiring their handiwork Jack remarked it was too bad they couldn’t buck a rea...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Mar 5, 2020

To the editor, So, you want to pick my nursing home? You better have a good education and a place for me to go, because you owe me or I will spend all your inheritance! Couple of years ago, our granddaughter said to her father (our son), “watch out old man, I pick your nursing home”. It was again a reminder that our youth need the education and resources to “take care of the elders” when the time comes. We believe that support for Garfield County Hospital is a critical requirement to continue a community atmosphere. Health providers and lon...

    Mar 5, 2020

Mike Field is our newest commissioner and we inquired why he wanted to participate in this community’s hospital district. He candidly expressed his hopes and desires for the Garfield County Hospital District. I have had a long professional and personal interest in the local health care system, and have been encouraged many times to consider running for a board position, especially considering my experience as administrator and previous service on the board. More recently I was approached about the possibility and I felt that now I had more t...

  • A Teen's Take

    KayLee Schmidt|Mar 5, 2020

POMEROY–One of the hardest things that I’ve had to do this year was finding a balance between school and my social life. It can be pretty difficult to balance those two things, especially when you have other clubs and sports. My biggest struggle right now is deciding if I want to get the highest grade in all of my classes or enjoy my high school years and live a little. I’m the type of person who makes choices depending on how it will affect me in the long run. I understand that those type of pe...
