POMEROY–In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Garfield County Commissioner Justin Dixon stated Garfield, Columbia and Walla Walla Counties applied for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) through the Washington State Department of Commerce and received $53,000 of the $8.1 million fund. The grant is for counties with current DCBG Public Services Grant contracts and will help with economic, social and health recovery resulting from a declared emergency or disaster. Dixon added that the funds will be sent to the Blue Mountain Action C...

POMEROY–The COVID-19 pandemic and the isolation order by the governor prompted the decision to cancel this year’s Garfield County Pioneer Association Spring Tour in May and the Pioneer Day activities in June. Pioneer Day activities include the Pioneer Parade, Food Fair and annual Pioneer Association meeting in the Seeley Theater. This will only be the second time in over one hundred years that the Pioneer Day celebration, held on the second Saturday in June, has been suspended, the other time being in 1911. But because a large percentage of...

By Wayne Davis POMEROY–The local All Class Reunion Committee has decided to cancel the reunion planned June 12, 2020. In consideration of the COVID-19 virus and impact it appears to have on “mature” folks, we have decided to cancel the event until 2021. Even though there are currently no confirmed cases in Garfield and county, it appears our isolation has played a major influence. We also want to take into consideration those who would typically travel and the safety of all, we feel it is in the best interest to provide another resource to re...

OLYMIA–The COVID-19 situation leads to budget vetoes. The last day, under our state constitution, for the governor to act on legislation passed during the 2020 session was Friday April, 10. Because his stay-at-home order clearly is going to mean a big hit to state revenues, it makes sense to lower the cost of state government as much as possible, and as soon as possible. Governor Inslee took a step toward that today by vetoing nearly 150-line items in the supplemental budget before signing i...
Mary waited for Jesus outside the cave The promised resurrection meant He was saved. While others waited a savior to come Mary awaited her son. The baby she had called Jesus stood in a crowd Others gathered around Him. She was so proud. She always worried in spite of His good That he’d be misunderstood. Mary, it’s nothing you’ve done He always marched to some other drum You did all any mother could do He was His Father’s son. Mary carried his sandals. Stood by his side. Memories, sweet reflections, shone in His eyes “Take care of Mary, for...
Ten Years Ago April 7, 2010 Eastern Washington Agricultural Museum dedicated a ground power sweep donated by Phil and Terrie Johnson of Cloverland at a ceremony during Spring Farming Days. The machine was used by homesteaders in the late 1800s. County Commissioners approved a plan for the emergency replacement of the HVAC system in the district’s long-term care building. The board must also address the hospital’s 1948 electrical wiring. Twenty-Five Years Ago April 12, 1995 A trailer house in the New Moon Trailer Court in Pomeroy was des...
To the editor, Welcome to the new normal. Where the once thriving service economy has taken a dump and socialism is looking pretty good. Also, now our super heroes are police, doctors, nurses, fire fighters, and grocery cashiers. At least we can still vote in this state, and for that, as well as all the heroes we have, I am grateful. Locally, our politicians have been busy making sure we are informed voters by sending us pretty tables and power point pages. They love to display it over and over without really understanding what they’re a...
Garfield County Hospital District is proud to announce February's Employee of the Month, Nancy Starkweather, Dietary. She was nominated by her co-workers who say, "She has been a reliable employee for 30 plus years." Nancy was born and raised in Pomeroy and graduated from PHS in 1979. At age 15 she began working as a nurse's aide under Ruby Porter, Director of Nursing. This position was equivalent to a CNA, by today's standards, only there were no classes or certification available at that...
POMEROY–It’s weird to think that our life routines, as we once knew them, are gone for now. What is even more odd is I’ve worn sweats for the past week and the only people I’ve talked to are my family and friends through social media. When this whole lockdown thing started, I was bummed t I couldn’t see anyone and complete my spring sports, but I was also excited to be stress-free for a little while. I was terribly wrong to think there would be even the slightest bit of stress–free, care–free,...

Editor's Note: In the absence of a season-ending awards ceremony, the East Washingtonian presents the next best thing under current virus-restrictive circumstances. POMEROY–Lady Pirate senior Madison "Maddy" Dixon and fellow seniors Alyssa Wolf, Heidi Heytvelt, Sydney Watko and Jaden Steele were front and center in a virtual tribute made by Coach Tai Bye on social media, reprinted here in condensed form since public gatherings are prohibited due to coronavirus.
