  • Honk if you support the Class of 2020

    Apr 16, 2020

The Pomeroy community turned out to recognize and support the Pomeroy High School Class of 2020–social-distancing style! Last Friday the call went out over social media for a tail-gater "flash mob" at Lybecker Field, where members of the senior class were parked and received the adulation of community members as they drove by with horns honking, lights flashing and plenty of spirited support to go along with it. The show of affection in the face of COVID-19-imposed restrictions demonstrated t...

  • Commentary

    Charlotte Baker|Apr 16, 2020

The April 28 Special Levy Election has the future of the Garfield County Hospital on the line. We believe there are plenty of good reasons to check the “yes” box when you vote. One of them is “life or death.” There is a lot of real estate between major hospitals around here. If some major medical event happens to someone in Garfield County—be they a long-time resident, someone passing through on Highway 12 or a hunter or snowmobiler enjoying the Blue Mountains of the Umatilla National Forest—the options are hospitals in the Valley or Spokane, a... Full story

  • On the Edge of Common Sense

    Baxter Black|Apr 16, 2020

“So, how’d yer dad git that big dent on the door?” I asked Dave. Truth is, it was quite an accomplishment for one single dent to stand out from all the other wear and tear, deterioration and assorted damage that covered his 1983 Ford Ranger diesel pickup truck like elephant tracks on a styrofoam cooler. “It’s a long story,” sighed Dave. Dave went with his mom and dad to gather the last of the cows off their forest permit above Feather Falls in the Sierra Madres of southern California....

  • Letters to the Editor

    Apr 16, 2020

To the editor, At a time when emergency hospitals are being brought in to use on both coasts and temporary hospitals and morgues are being set up in our country, it seems unconscionable that we are considering allowing our local hospital to slip out of existence. Our remote community feels safe. No Corona-19 here. What’s the big deal? We not only don’t have an epidemic; we don’t have disasters. No hurricanes, no tornados, no earthquakes, no floods, and no big crime problem in Garfield County. Like the frog sitting in the pan of water on the sto... Full story

  • Hospital Update

    Apr 16, 2020

The hospital levy ballots were mailed on April 10 and election day is April 28. This week we would like to take time to address some more common questions and concerns about the Hospital District and the levy. The first issue is the cost of laboratory procedures done at the hospital. It does generally cost a patient more to have labs done at the hospital than it would to have them done at an outpatient lab. This is not because our prices are significantly higher than other places. We did an...

  • A Teen's Take

    KayLee Schmidt|Apr 16, 2020

POMEROY–We now have experienced how much life has changed since the start of the COVID-19 isolate-in-place and closure of businesses. I have seen how difficult it has been on some people and realize how traumatic this thing is on our community. It was quick, unexpected and from what was said on TV, in the papers and explained to us by our community leaders, frightening. Even though our daily routine has flipped like a pancake and the only thing we can do is make the best of it by staying at h...

  • Pomeroy Pioneer Portraits

    Dotty Van Vogt|Apr 16, 2020

Ten Years Ago April 14, 2010 Garfield County Memorial Hospital is facing mounting pressure from the state electrical inspector to modernize the existing building to meet current code requirements. The building is safe and has been well maintained; however, a building built in 1948 is not going to meet today’s more stringent standards for hospital grade construction. The concern is not just the electrical systems, but also asbestos, plumbing, air quality, lighting, radon gases, and substandard patient rooms. State agencies won’t allow the hos...
