In response to the impacts of COVID-19, new Drive-In WiFi Hotspots provide free temporary, emergency internet access for Washingtonians who do not have broadband service to their homes. Garfield County has been selected as one of an initial fifteen locations in Washington to participate in the project. It provides wireless internet access to the parking lots both in front and behind the Denny Ashby Library. The emphasis is on student access, said Lillian Heytvelt, library director, but WiFi is...
POMEROY-Teleconferencing, the Courthouse drop box and courtroom sound system have become valuable tools in continuing the workings of County business with the public during the pandemic closures. During the May 11 Garfield County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting, Commissioner Justin Dixon announced the board will continue with teleconferences each Monday morning through the end of May. Even though the courthouse may re-open its doors once approved to move into Phase 3 of the Governor’s Safe Start recovery plan as early as June 1, they may c... Full story
For the past fifteen-plus years, Roger Dumbeck has volunteered every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to deliver meals to the homebound and shut-ins in Pomeroy and parts of Garfield County. He says he has missed some days, but the girls at the Senior Center and the clients he brings meals to say he has missed very few times bringing meals to the folks on his list. He arrives at the Center on delivery days and checks his list to make sure the number of cold and warm meals of food coordinate with the...

WASHINGTON, D.C.–Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) voted against Nancy Pelosi’s $3 trillion partisan wish list. “This is a crisis, and I’m anxious to talk seriously about addressing the devastation happening to our economy, but this is not a serious bill,” said McMorris Rodgers. “Speaker Pelosi’s bill would spend a record $3 trillion when the administration hasn’t even spent all of the funding Congress already authorized. This bill doesn’t include a single cent for the Forest Service to make changes to safely...

We must sell it, I told Mother, for we really have no other choice. The price is much too dear to harbor any doubt. And though I know we’ll miss it, the time has come to kiss it goodbye and find another place a little further out. When the Indians sold Manhattan to a Dutch aristocrat in fancy breeches for a blanket and a twenty dollar bill It presaged a corrosion, an urban sprawl erosion that covets all the fertile ground and overruns us still. It’s not givin’ up, I told her, just that we are g...
As we watch the COVID-19 pandemic on the global and local stage, we in Garfield County can be grateful. So far, we have had zero confirmed COVID-19 cases. It is hard to say whether our lack of COVID-19 cases is due to our quarantine efforts, to providence, or just good luck. In any case, our community has done a great job and should be congratulated. However, it’s not time to let down our guard and declare victory. Warmer weather may help, but the COVID-19 virus is still out there and is still contagious. We would like to remind you of two p...
POMEROY–It has come to my attention as a high schooler and even some recent graduates, we sometimes take things for granted. What I mean is the ability to talk with another person face-to-face without distancing restrictions. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we could talk while standing right next to each other and to keep the conversation going, we would text. Then the order to stay home and away from each other came down and personal communication stopped. At first it was kind of fun texting o...
