POMEROY–Plans to move forward with the Garfield County Fair in September were made at the May 19 Fair Board teleconference meeting with the "Phasing" process as its measurement. Due to the ongoing concern of COVID-19, the board also voted to restrict the 2020 fair to Garfield County residents only, and consider each subsequent year separately. The rodeo, put on by the Pony Punchers, was discussed with the Fair Board, with being in contact with the Pony Punchers to coordinate plans discussed. T...

POMEROY–John Hirsch, Garfield County Emergency Management Director, addressed the County Commissioners regarding how to budget coronavirus relief funds from the Department of Commerce (DOC) during the meeting on May 18. The DOC has issued a list of requirements on how the funds may be used. The funds will be paid as a reimbursement to the County, and it has not yet been decided if that will be at 75% or 100% of the incurred expense. Hirsch believes that there is a "good possibility" that it w...
POMEROY–The August 4 Primary Election will narrow a three-candidate field for Garfield County Commissioner Position 1 following the recently completed Filing Week, with incumbent Commissioner Wynne McCabe seeking re-election with a challenger. Three Republican candidates, Vonni (Vonda) Mulroney, P. Ernest Kimble and Jim Nelson, have filed for Position 1, which is currently held by Robert K. Johnson, who announced earlier this year that he would not run for another term. The top two vote getters in the Primary Election will advance to the Novemb...

There are two to three regular commuters being served with this route. To add protection, a Plexiglas shield separating the driver from the riders was installed in one bus. However, they have not had success in locating more Plexiglas for the other vehicles. A second vehicle that they are running has a shower curtain that has been fashioned into a shield. D...

The sport (passion, or affliction) of team roping experienced a terrific boom in popularity years ago with the creation of an association called United States Team Roping Championships (USTRC). It established a classification system based on the roper’s skill. It is comparable to the handicapping system used in golf. The result is that ropers are able to compete with others of ‘equal ability’ therefore increasing their chances of winning. As a roper improves, his USTRC number increases. Classifications begin at #1 which is defined as True...
POMEROY–Life without going to school has become complicated and seems down-right weird. Honestly, I miss all of it. Even the educational factor of school. Now that we have been doing online school for a while, I have learned it is nothing what I imagined it to be like. I was expecting it to be more fun and easier, but in reality, it is not that at all. Online learning is challenging because to ask a question, I must type it out, which is sometime hard to express, especially if I don’t know or...
To meet the needs of the community today and in the future, Garfield County Hospital District is pleased to announce an enhanced Transitional Care program. This is a high quality, evidence-based program for patients who are well enough to leave a traditional hospital setting but still have nursing, therapy, or respiratory needs that may not be optimally met in their homes or skilled nursing facilities. Some examples of these needs would include frequent intravenous medications, wound care, breathing treatments, nursing assessment and care of...

By Kevin Leslie Lassiter The project consisted of weeding the rows of rose bushes and repainting the bench that resides on the property, this is located at the end of Columbia street near the Colman Oil gas station. Lean Clayton (The properties gardener) requested that I remove the plastic barrier in the rows in addition to the weeding. The weeding took the longest because not only did I have to work around the weather, for the longest time I weeded the rows in one of the slowest ways possible....
By Brooke Ames, Mason Blachly and Jack Lyle This project was a six-and-a-half-month-long process. My group decided to take the Ruark/New Century Cemetery and create a place where people can see their loved ones. The first day of working there was only one or two headstones that could actually be seen and the rest were covered by brush. Most days were spent cutting and burning piles of brush. For the first couple months we worked on Saturdays because between the three of us that was usually the...
By Olivia Meyers, Anna Dinsmore and Byron Stallcop Nowadays, pursuing a higher education is a financial burden on many. The Community Scholarship was created last year by Alex Bremer, who did it with her classmates Avery Ruchert and Wyatt Flynn. We took this project over this year because we wanted to help and encourage our classmates to further their education after high school by providing another local scholarship opportunity. Our goal was to raise a large sum of money with the support of...
By Evan Bartels and Danner Maves Our project was to organize and execute a food drive. We accomplished this by asking for permission from Susie Bowles, the head of the Garfield County Food Bank, to run a food drive. We then asked Mark Schmitt of Pomeroy Foods to donate some grocery bags so we could drop one off along with flyers we would create at each house. Graciously he did and we went on to creating flyers to put in these bags as well as signs to hang up in local businesses where people coul...
By Briielle Robison For my senior project, I wanted to do something that created a fun activity for Jr. High and High School students. I decided that holding a Stranger Things marathon at the Seeley Theatre would be really fun and would give the youth in our community an event that was meant for them. Costumes were encouraged, snacks could be purchased, the decorations were themed, and there was a prize at the end for whoever's name was drawn. I did this project by myself because I knew that it...
Ten Years Ago May 26, 2010 Garfield County Sheriff Larry Bowles submitted his resignation last week, stating a “medical retirement” recommended by his physician. Undersheriff Ben Keller was appointed interim sheriff. Puget Sound Energy announced the start of construction on Phase I of the Lower Snake River Wind Project in Garfield County. The 343-megawatt project will generate electricity for more than 100,000 homes and create 175 green jobs. My name is Tanner Bremer and I am in the Senior Project group with Heidi Heytvelt, Teagan Steele and Jaden Steele. For our Senior Project, we finished painting the mural on the pool, the locker room walls and floors, as well as the office trims and floor. This project was an extremely lengthy one. There were many times that I thought that we weren't going to finish the project, but then the COVID-19 hit and we were able to work on it a lot more. I honestly can't think where we would be today if...
By Alyssa Wolf, Sydney Watko, Maddy Dixon Our senior project is a fundraising basketball tournament for charity. We raised money for the Diabetes Foundations at St. Joseph Hospital and for Shriners Hospital. The tournament was Saturday, November 23, 2019. It was a girls' basketball tournament for grades three through eight. To successfully run the tournament, we needed to reserve both gyms, contact teams, make schedules, get volunteers to work, and get a supervisor to monitor the courts....
My name is Imigin Latham and this year of 2019-20 for my senior project I repainted the City Park with my partner Alyssa Rayford. My partner and I worked on our project over the summer. We had painted the table benches and the bench swings. We chose to repaint them because they had the most paint that was chipping off and fading. The city helped us by getting the paint and paint brushes we needed in order to complete our project. We appreciate the help with the cost of our project. It helped us...
This year for my senior project I helped coach Little guy football. I was an assistant coach to coach Kyle Kimble. Right after my own high school practices I would stay and help with anything and everything that the coaches needed. I really enjoyed being a part of the coaching staff because I could see the change in the players attitudes and their willingness to play. I also chose this as my project because I love football. I believe this project helps benefit younger kids in our community. I...
Dillen Gerking has been busy with his recycling senior project this year. His project was facilitating the grade school and high school with their recycling needs. He was in charge of collecting the recycling bags from classrooms when they were full and replacing them with empty ones. Dillen was also in charge of collecting cardboard from each building, breaking it down, and taking it to the recycling station by the county shop. Dillen appreciates Steve Grim for helping with the bin at the...
By Sawyer Tardif For my senior project, I refurbished the greeting signs on the East and West ends of Pomeroy. This project was not extremely time consuming but I do believe that the end result was rewarding. While I was working on my project, I had a lot of people noticing me. They were honking and waving. It really showed me how much people care about those signs and the community as a whole, and how doing something small can really impact the overall look of the town. I also think that...
