A fire dubbed the Cougar Creek Fire, located about a mile west of Highway 129 and the Grand Ronde River intersection has grown to 10,766 acres and is 23% contained, according to the Washington Department of Natural Resources Southeast Region. Captain, an Alsatian dog, similar to a large Husky, slept loyally by his master's grave for 14 years before passing away. He disappeared after his master died but was found several months later when the family visited the cemetery. Captain had never been to the cemetery before. Ten Years Ago July 30, 2014 The Harold and Helen Shepherd Foundation has awarded the Pomeroy City Walk project a $2,000 grant. Project creator David Webb's goal is eventually to place about 40 vintage neon signs in downtown Pomeroy. Though the City of Pomeroy waived permit fees for installation of the signs, the project will incur additional expense of about $200 per sign for state permits and required electrical items. Deadman fire, dubbed the "Dan Fire" GARFIELD COUNTY–A pasture fire was reported at 134 S. Deadman Road about 10 miles from Pomeroy on July 29 at 12:30 p.m. Area County fire districts were asked to assist. Garfield County, Columbia County, Walla Walla County Fire Districts and was air support to fight this grassland fire to prevent spread. Afternoon wind picked up and so did increase blaze movement.
