  • On the Edge of Common Sense

    Baxter Black|Aug 19, 2021

Corn country landscape - painted late summer - high clouds, heavy with moisture waiting for afternoon to thicken and darken and start raising Cain. You can see for miles. Brown, green, yellow patchwork pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle. Feedlots in the distance, their pens spread out like dark blankets on the side of a hill. On the horizon to the north and south I can count three spray planes circling over the corn like buzzards. They are so far away I cannot hear them. Closer I can see circle spr...

MERCER ISLAND–During 2020, and thus far in 2021, more people under the age of 50 have been murdered in Washington State than have died due to COVID-19. While it is incredibly tragic that 304 Washington State residents under 50 have died from the coronavirus, it is alarming that recent data shows that at least 313 of the state’s under 50 population have been murdered. While this statistic is alarming enough, the true comparative data is even worse, for while the COVID death data (from the Washington State Department of Health) is current to las...

  • LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

    Aug 19, 2021

To the editor, Being new to Pomeroy and being new to small-town life has been an education for me. The lack of stores and opportunities for socialization has me thinking about what I can do to improve my new home town. I have been surprised at the lack of support for our own businesses. No matter where I’v lived, I tried to use the local business. If we don’t use them, we will lose them. LC valley is great, but not convenient often. I was sad to see The Palace closing and fear we will see more of our businesses having to close when we do not...
