  • City's waste issue thickens

    Dotty Van Vogt|Oct 24, 2019

POMEROY–The city has been notified it is non-compliant with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Permit. Part of the problem was that Columbia Pulp overloaded the system for a while, but it is now hauling its waste to Spokane at a large cost to the company. Although the Department of Ecology (DOE) inspected and issued permits prior to Columbia Pulp starting up, their permit allows more waste to be produced than the city’s permit allows. Also, Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) contractor Scott Potter was unaware that temperatures had...

  • Aaron Stallcop is Fire Commissioner candidate

    Oct 24, 2019

My interest in the emergency services started 14 years ago when I graduated from WSU. I had just landed my first teaching job with the university, was single, and living alone in Pullman. I found that I had entirely too much energy and time on my hands, and I needed something to do. A good friend and mentor of mine suggested that I join the Pullman Fire Department (PFD). Before long, I was thrust deep into an IFSAC Firefighter 1 program and earning my First Responder license through the PFD...

  • Guest Commentary

    Jason Mercier|Oct 24, 2019

With Halloween just over a week away, perhaps it’s fitting that some states hope to cash in from the Grim Reaper via their death taxes. Sadly, Washington is among the few states still counting on death to fund certain programs. For example, the Tax Foundation recently reported that Washington has the highest death tax (estate) rate in the country. Perhaps more importantly, Washington is the only state without an income tax that imposes a death tax. As noted by a study released today, this could cause competitive challenges from our fellow n...

  • Warren's nomination would turn election into existential threat to economy

    Marc A. Thiessen|Oct 24, 2019

WASHINGTON–With three polls showing her in the lead, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., may soon eclipse former vice president Joe Biden as the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. That’s great news for Republicans, because Warren has a problem: The central message of her campaign is that the economy is working for the very wealthy but it is not working for ordinary Americans. Unfortunately for her, ordinary Americans disagree. A Marist poll asked voters whether “the econo...

  • Farm Animals in History

    Baxter Black|Oct 24, 2019

Mankind from prehistory to space exploration has always depended on animals for help in their quest for advancing civilization. Granted, often as bait or as guinea pigs, but we have depended on them, nonetheless. After extensive research of my cerebral micro files I’ve discovered several remarkable case histories that have affected the course of our world. For instance, Admiral Perry carried a Canadian goose on his Arctic trek to find the North Pole. Whenever the magnetic field messed up his c...

  • A Teen's Take

    KayLee Schmidt|Oct 24, 2019

POMEROY– Thanks to Muriel Bott, I recently met with some travelers from Finland and spoke with a thirteen-year old girl named Lina Kortejarvi. In our discussion, I learned she was from a village called Askola. I was able to ask her some questions about what it is like to be traveling around the world as a teenager. Lina isn't a whole lot different than me and my friends. Her favorite food is pizza. She plays soccer and likes spending time with her friends. She has two brothers who she said w...
