  • Seniors on the Go

    Cindy Klaveano|Oct 31, 2019

How does a girl born, raised and educated in the Midwest end up spending most of her ninety years in Garfield County? Simple! She followed her husband and her heart. Orleatha Gasseling was born in the small town of Alliance, Neb., on June 8, 1929, to Joe and Alice Halbur. She was an only child and went to a nearby country school until she was in the sixth grade. When her father quit farming and moved to Denver to become a barber, Orleatha finished her elementary schooling there and then...

  • Guest Commentary

    Sen. Mark Schoesler|Oct 31, 2019

OLYMPIA–Much of the talk about our state's business climate has to do with the tax burden–and rightfully so. For example, early in this year's legislative session the governor's budget director told our Senate budget committee that providers of professional services (such as veterinarians and accountants) are undertaxed, which is why Governor Inslee was proposing to hit them with a huge increase in the state B&O (business and occupation) tax they pay. Sure enough, Inslee's political allies use...

  • The partisan nature of the Democrats' impeachment inquiry will backfire

    Marc A. Thiessen|Oct 31, 2019

WASHINGTON–After dozens of House Republicans demanded access to a secure facility in the Capitol on Wednesday where House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., was preparing to depose a Pentagon official, Democrats expressed outrage at the breach of protocol. “They’re doing this because this is what the guilty do,” said Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif. “Innocent people cooperate with investigations. Innocent people follow the rules of the House.” Well, people engaged in impartial i...

  • A Hundred Years From now

    Baxter Black|Oct 31, 2019

Life has always been a balancing act between the haves and have-nots. Less populated industrial countries use the major portion of fossil fuel while third world countries still farm by hand and recreate. The world population is expected to increase by a billion every upcoming decade. If we could snap our fingers and by magic, make some change that might save the earth from its inhabitants, what would we do? “Birth control,” said Steve. “You mean anything?” asked J.D. “Yup . . .” I said. “I’d tra...

  • Another voice for agriculture joins State Senate

    Oct 31, 2019

By Sen. Mark Schoesler, R-9th OLYMPIA–More often than not for the past quarter-century-plus I’ve been the lone full-time farmer in the Legislature, but that has just changed. Earlier this week I welcomed Ron Muzzall, the new senator from the 10th Legislative District, which includes all of Island County, the northwest part of Snohomish County and southwest Skagit County. The commissioners from those three counties selected him to succeed the now-retired Barbara Bailey; like her, he is a Republican from the Oak Harbor part of Whidbey Isl...

  • A Teen's Take

    KayLee Schmidt|Oct 31, 2019

POMEROY–Homecoming is almost here! Everyone has expectations of how the week activities and dance are going to be, especially the freshman since it’s their first high school dance. In the movies, it’s this big glamorous thing that everyone fawns overt but, I have a feeling it’s not going to be what that way. I think it’s not even the dance that is the best part, but what comes before and after it. In my group, which is only girls, we are not doing anything formal. Our plan is to order Panda Exp...
