  • Another hospital levy anticipated in 2020

    By Caroline Moore POMEROY–The final Garfield County Hospital District (GCHD) levy results were announced at the recently special meeting with 58.29 % votes received of the required 60% that was needed to pass the levy. The President of the Garfield County Hospital Board (GCHDB) affirmed that the hospital district is not closing and anticipates running another levy in 2020 which can be held in either February, April, August or November.     POMEROY–High School freshman Lane Shawley, in his first year of saddle bronc competitions, went to Ogden, Ut., to qualify for competition in the Junior World Finals (formerly known as the Junior National Finals Rodeo) taking place on December 5 and December 7, 2019.     Born and raised in Garfield County, Robert Koller was number twelve of thirteen children and is the last survivor of the Lynn Gulch country school. He attended elementary school there until three days into the seventh grade when the forty-three school districts in the county consolidated. Only Gould City and Mayview kept their country school and in time, they too, consolidated.     POMEROY-At the recent Garfield County Commissioners meeting on November 18, representatives of the 2020 Census for the United States Census Bureau, Terry Nealey and Juan Sanchez, visited with the commissioners to discuss the importance of getting every citizen in the County to participate. Sanchez is in charge of the activities of the 2020 Census for Walla Walla, Columbia and Garfield Counties.     POMEROY–The annual Sausage Shoot is planned at the Pomeroy Gun Club on December 6-8. The Gun Club is looking for as many members who are able to help get the grounds cleaned up and make preparations for the Sausage/Turkey shoot. Clean-up will begin Sunday, December 1 at 9 a.m. Then, on Friday December 6 at 7 a.m., club members will gather for sausage making.     PENDLETON, Ore. – Personal-use firewood cutting on the Umatilla National Forest will end Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019. Firewood permits will not be available again until May 2020. The public is asked to take additional precautions when cutting firewood late in the fall when road and soil conditions become slick, soggy and saturated.     Marjorie Ethel Killingsworth November 10, 1921-November 19, 2019 Marjorie (Marge) Ethel Killingsworth passed on November 19, 2019 at the age of 98. Marjorie was born to Herb and Ethel Beckley on November 10, 1921 and spent her childhood on a wheat farm in Benge, Wash. She graduated from Ritzville High School in 1939 and from Washington State University in 1943. She married Ken Killingsworth from Pomeroy in 1943.
