In 1963 Dr. Christian Barnard performed the first human-to-human heart transplant. The surgery was considered a success even though the patient only lived 18 days. When Jesus Christ comes into one's heart (the center of our spiritual and physical life) it results in eternal life, salvation, and transformation. In one of her books Christian fiction writer Janette Oke writes of a youth devotion that was given: "He (Troy) had several hearts to display to the group. A black one represented the...

History records an enlightening commentary on God's gracious relationship with the United States of America. The esteemed patriot, Patrick Henry, declared unashamedly, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ." The words, "What Hath God Wrought," taken from Numbers 23:23, comprised the inaugural message transmitted by the newly invented electric telegraph....

Part 12 ...Continuing. Moss ducked his head beneath the doorway as Denny pulled him into the shack. It was a one-room shed, with warped wallboards and a dirt floor. One table leg didn't reach the floor and the two chairs were spindly affairs that didn't look like they would hold Moss's weight. The cabin was basic, but clean and welcoming. In the center of the table stood a tin tomato can full of wildflowers. "Sis!" Denny called. "I brought a friend." Denny's sister turned from the stove and Moss...

Those who grew up watching westerns are accustomed to the phrase, "circle the wagons." It meant that when the covered wagon pioneers were in danger of attack or severe storms, they would place their wagons in a circle, providing a wall of protection against the foe. The phrase is used commonly these days to describe the need to take protective caution in one form or another. In this volatile world in which we live, it encourages us to know the Lord promises to encircle our path. "You hem me in b...

–Part 11 Continuing...Deveney's red-haired thug spun and snarled at Moss. "You got a death wish boy?" He dropped his hand to the big pistol on his hip. Moss grabbed for his gun as well. A metallic sound pinged through the air and he flinched as a bullet whistled past him to thud into the wall. He stepped sideways to get out of the cloud of gunsmoke around him and saw the red-haired man on his knees, cradling his arm. The man's pistol lay behind him, at the base of the bar, with a bullet scar t...

It's sometimes difficult to get up and start the day. A small town experienced 39 degrees below zero temperatures and, in the morning, only one car in the whole town was operating. None of the other cars would start. The only one running was started before the extreme freeze (and was kept running) by a very wise person who knew how to prepare. Starting our day off takes preparation. Jesus started his day off rising early in the morning and finding a solitary place where He could commune with...

-Part 10 ...continuing. Moss stood behind the mostly-closed door of the livery, watching through the narrow gap as a dozen men rode into town at a lope. The man in the lead was a large man with dark facial hair. His horse was two hands taller than the other outlaws' horses, and it threw its head as they rode up to the saloon. "That's Deveney," the kid whispered in Moss's ear. "My sis says he's the worst outlaw since the Plummer Gang." Moss raised his eyebrows. "Just what is your name, kid?"...
