We are all tempted to be afraid on occasion, especially in the world we are living in today. Jesus spoke to the idea of fear, saying "Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (Jn. 14:27). We are not to be afraid. In place of fear, we are to trust the Lord and receive the peace He gives. Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you" Jn. 14:27. Jesus Christ has the authority as the Son of God and the Prince of Peace to give us peace. The peace He gives is described...

On a recent Sunday during worship we play a game called Snowballs. It’s a game I have played in Confirmation to encourage people to ask their God questions. The congregation each wrote their questions on a piece of paper, wadded it up to resemble a snowball and then had a “snowball fight.” It was great fun with lots of giggles. The snowballs were collected up by Katie Leid, passed out again in their wadded-up shape. Three people read the questions they had picked out of the basket. They read the questions of others, not their own quest...

Ten Years Ago October 8, 2014 The Pomeroy Babe Ruth baseball program now has an AED-Plus fully automatic defibrillator for use at the ballfields at the west end of the city. Ed Fruh of the program said purchasing the defibrillator was possible because of a $2,000 grant the program received from Puget Sound Energy Foundation. "We hope we never have to use it, but it is comforting to know we have one if needed," he said. Ed said the defibrillator will be placed in school gyms during the winter...

  • Pop culture costumes are bound to be big this year

    Oct 3, 2024

One of the best ways to get in on the Halloween costume fun is to choose a look that borrows from popular culture. This year there is no shortage of inspiration for those who want to look like their favorite movie, television and game characters. Comic book hero "frenemies" Marvel's popular characters joined forces in "Deadpool & Wolverine" this year with the titular stars played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, respectively. Though he was well into his 80s, my friend Walter Nolan would regularly (almost daily) walk the dirt road to the very top of the hill overlooking the Dayton Cemetery. There he would extend his arms around his view of Dayton, imagine he was holding it in his hands, and pray that the people in it would know the love of God by accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. It is no wonder people who knew Walter felt him to be kind and joyful, even in difficult circumstances. Walter's prayer for Dayton...

My heart was made lighter when I visited a nursing home resident diagnosed with a terminal disease. As we were visiting, she shared how much she enjoyed watching the squirrels climb on the pole just outside her window. Her appreciative and joyful attitude was an encouragement to me. Right at that moment a squirrel came along and grabbed hold of the pole with all four feet, rapidly climbing to the top. I'd never carefully observed a squirrel climbing before, and I was struck at how firmly all...

Ten Years Ago September 24, 2014 The storefront at 708 Main Street (formerly Video Visions, now Linda's Yard Sale) has a brand new look...or is it a new old look? Just a glance in the east window reveals hints of a bygone era, of the excitement of "modern conveniences" such as the conveyor belt 'toastalator' that made meal preparation and entertaining faster, simpler, and more enjoyable. The west window display harkens back to days when the magic of childhood happened in board games and books...
