We are promised: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”(1 Jn. 1:9). We are not honoring His faithful character to forgive us when we keep poking ourselves for something we are ashamed of in our past. We are not honoring His faithful...

-Continued from Oct. 26 The township of Kirby nestled into a pocket between rolling hills, a farming settlement of a few hundred people. Sam Morgant drove his wagon up the main street that ran through the town and stopped at the doors of the general store. Ron Casady, with two men, who looked to be his brothers, strode from the store. He met Sam’s eyes with an arrogant smile and tipped his head in greeting. One brother was taller than Ron and so lean he looked like he would blow over. The o...
Mom's wooden mixing spoon was often used on our backsides. Though she didn't paddle too hard, it was her choice instrument for disciplining us kids. My siblings and I became skillful at hiding the spoon from her or "accidentally" breaking it when we knew that discipline was coming. The strange thing is that the very instrument that brought the sting of discipline was also instrumental in bringing us tasty dishes to eat. She used the spoon to mix up cakes, pies, meat loafs, and tasty casseroles....

In chapter 22 of Matthew's Gospel, Jesus is asked by the Pharisees, "Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?". It was a trap: answering "no" would place Jesus in opposition to Caesar and the Romans and make way for his prosecution by them; answering "yes" would be used by the Pharisees to turn away from him those devout Jews who despised Roman governance over the land of Israel. Jesus asks for a Roman coin and questions, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?" They respond,...

But this i...
Bright wooden splinters lay smashed into the dust. Sam Morgan knelt in his neighbor's empty corral, studying the prints. Sam stood, brushing dirt from his knee. "Maybe." He had only seen horse tracks, but a cat would scare them without entering the corral. "Tough break." He looked down the draw, trying to guess where they might have gone...
