A fellow who knocked at our door asked me where certain people lived in our Dayton neighborhood. He had grown up nearby. When I told him I didn't know any of the names he mentioned, he said, "Well, I guess what they say is true. Once you leave, you can never go home again". In the Christmas carol "Hark the Herald" the author writes, "Fix in us Thy humble home". The wonders of Christmas are personal to us because they speak of our home. We have the Lord in our lives, fixing His home in us. Jesus...

Every December, a familiar debate resurfaces: Are Christmas traditions rooted in paganism or pure Christian celebration? This year, it's time to set the record straight and reclaim the profound spiritual meaning behind our most beloved holiday. Contrary to popular misconceptions, Christmas is not a stolen pagan festival, but a powerful testament to Christianity's ability to transform cultural expressions into a celebration of divine love. Early Christian missionaries didn't simply replace...

Very large ships aren't designed to go backwards. They are built as efficiently as possible to go forward, even to the detriment of not being able to easily go backward. Though some ships can go backwards, it takes expert navigating and precise use of the controls. Most require the help of tug boats. Believers have something in common with big ships. The Lord has designed us to go forward, not backward. He warned us we would face all kinds of obstacles and challenges, yet we are always moving...

  • Signs a person is unsafe to drive

    Dec 19, 2024

The end of a calendar year is a time of celebration. From Halloween to New Year's Day, people attend an array of parties, dinners and other gatherings. Although alcohol is not a vital component of these occasions, quite frequently adult beverages are part of the equation. And when everyone is toasting for one reason or another, it can be easy for people to lose track of their alcohol consumption. When everyone is laughing and reminiscing with drinks in hand, it can be challenging to determine...

Understanding God's True Nature. When trouble comes, what's your first thought about God? Scripture reveals that He is, first and foremost, a loving Father. Genesis 1:27 shows that He created us in His image, a deliberate act of love, not a casual decision. Though sin entered the world and created separation from God (Romans 5:12), it never changed His love for us. Instead, it led to the greatest demonstration of love: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that...

Three other men looked uncertain as they stood beside a stall. They looked ready to bolt. Mr. Hayes, I dearly hope you aren't planning to get all our citizens shot up," she...

We need to be wise about what we start because it may be hard to stop. The little boys were playing "Texas Rangers" in the family car while parked on a slope. Accidentally placing the car in neutral, they ended up rolling backwards down the hill, crashing through a fence, and ending up in the hog pen, unhurt. Their little legs couldn't reach the brake pedal. What they started took its course, frightfully taking them where they didn't want to go. Whether it is starting a fire, an argument, or...
