To the editor, I would like to recognize and applaud the success of the 2022 Pirate Hoops for Kids: Pomeroy Basketball Camp. Camp was provided by the PHS Girls Basketball Team and ran by Head Coach Tai Bye and Assistant Coach, Gena Severson. Kindergarten through seventh grade students were participants from Monday, June 13th through Thursday, June 16th. Growing up in the small town of Davenport, WA and participating in local basketball camps and larger ones, had me excited for my two daughters to participate. Each day I would pick them up a...
Editor’s note: Jack Peasley contacted Doug Griffiths, MBA with Kelly Clemmer, the author of “13 Ways to Kill Your Community” published by Friesen Press, who graciously gave permission to reprint in the East Washingtonian, the first chapter of his book. What follows is part five of five of Chapter 1, Forget the Water. CHAPTER 1 FORGET THE WATER continued After many years of watching the community suffer with their water issues, I actually thought the tide had started to turn and they would tie in to the water line. Team Angry must have thought s... Full story
Washington, D.C.–Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) helped pass the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2022, which included critical language she requested to help protect the Lower Snake River dams and create an even playing field for Pacific Northwest Ratepayers as Columbia River Treaty negotiations proceed. “Salmon and dams can–and do–co-exist. Study after study has shown the critical benefits the Lower Snake River dams provide to our region: affordable and reliable hydropower, low-emissions transportation...
Editor’s note: Jack Peasley contacted Doug Griffiths, MBA with Kelly Clemmer, the author of “13 Ways to Kill Your Community” published by Friesen Press, who graciously gave permission to reprint in the East Washingtonian, the first chapter of his book. What follows is part four of five of Chapter 1, Forget the Water. CHAPTER 1 When the fourth group did listen at public meetings and in the coffee shops, the third faction held the most sway. In fact, the third faction, the naysayer team, nearly always has the most sway in any debate. I recal... Full story

What follows is part three of five of Chapter 1, Forget the Water. CHAPTER 1 FORGET THE WATER continued Many of us have experienced water shortages for short or seasonal periods during times of drought. We are all aware of the dangerous situation of a prolonged drought as experienced in Calif...
For the third year in a row, the Snake River Spring/Summer Chinook salmon run has increased. On May 22, the Spring/Summer Chinook returns surpassed the 2021 total, with 86 days remaining before the end of the run. Returns to date have been double the levels of 2021 and are above the 10-year average. For those who follow Snake River salmon, this was not unexpected. In 2020, I co-authored an editorial with the former coordinator of Governor Inslee's Salmon Recovery Office, noting that "Some...
To the editor, Tumbleweed Weekend. There has been a lot of discourse over the years about the term “Tumbleweed Weekend”. I have some in our community say that it is outdated, that it doesn’t put our town in a nice light, and that it should be done away with altogether. I could not disagree more. To me, Tumbleweed Weekend is very dear to my heart. I have such fond memories of decorating my bike or my power wheels car to ride in the parade, or walking with my Girl Scout Troop, or just sitting on the sidewalk waiting for candy. Now that I am ol...
Editor’s note: Jack Peasley contacted Doug Griffiths, MBA, with Kelly Clemmer, the author of “13 Ways to Kill Your Community,” published by Friesen Press, who graciously gave permission to reprint the first chapter of his book-East Washingtonian. What follows is part two of five segments of Chapter 1, “Forget the Water.” (Continued from May 19 edition.) The quality of water we expect has gone far beyond only what we drink, however. Very few people in North America are willing to buy a house with water stains running down the tub or around th...
To the editor, Ronald Reagan once said something like, “isn’t it interesting that the people who are pro-abortion are people who had the opportunity to be born?” When President Donald Trump addressed Congress during his term, he gave a most moving and impressive speech. He reinforced in his address his commitment to protect the most innocent of our population, the unborn. When he said that, a little over half the room burst into a standing ovation. The left of humanity sat with their arms folded across their chests and had anger in their expre...

What follows is part one of five of Chapter 1, Forget the Water. CHAPTER 1 The evolution of humanity can be seen in the development of its communities. I’ll speak more of this in a later chapter, but essentially communities formed out of a need for security and protection. As the risk and thr...
Vaccine hesitancy has been continuously shamed by Gov. Jay Inslee and was again Saturday in an interview on Crosscut. People who don’t get vaccinated or boosted, according to the governor, are making an irresponsible choice, holding the rest of us back and — listening to Donald Trump. Alternately, getting vaccinated and boosted keeps you and others safe, the governor’s tale goes. That’s the justification, after all, for his discriminatory vaccine mandate on state employees, educators, first responders and other health care workers—a mandate h...
To the editor, Recently, I went to Garfield County Hospital’s Emergency Department for a respiratory issue. It was a Sunday afternoon, and after being let in, I was immediately treated by two nurses, one of whom called the on-call provider, Courtney Travis, ARNP. Courtney was there within a matter of minutes, and the nurse had already started me on a nebulizer to assist with my breathing. She introduced herself, asked pertinent questions, and made me feel as comfortable as possible. Not long afterwards, I was feeling better, and was released w...
POMEROY––“Some small communities thrive and grow while others die offering no hope for future generations.” Nearly five years ago, the Clarkston Chamber of Commerce invited SEWEDA to attend an event featuring Doug Griffiths, an author promoting his new book entitled “13 Ways to Kill Your Community”. Mr. Griffiths’s presentation was lively and precise, as entertaining as it was informative. We bought the book, and it was one of the best investments we have ever made. Many small rural communi...
OLYMPIA–For just the cost of flying himself and his wife to Scotland in business class, Governor Inslee could have eliminated the CO2 emissions from his entire staff for more than one year. If you include the cost of support staff and security, he could have eliminated all staff CO2 emissions for almost all of his first two terms in office. According to The Center Square, the Washington State Office of Financial Management disclosed that taxpayers paid $12,510.08 to fly the Governor and his wife...
In recent years, environmentalists have targeted natural gas, even though it is an affordable energy source for so many. Their efforts have failed in the Legislature, but apparently Governor Inslee and his environmental allies found another way to restrict natural gas use. Last Friday, the State Building Code Council, whose members are appointed by the governor, voted 11-3 to change the state’s energy code by requiring new businesses and apartments to mostly use heat pumps to warm air and w...
Proponents of the unconstitutional capital gains income tax are working overtime to prevent voters from weighing in. First, there was the game last year with the emergency clause to prevent a referendum. Now capital gains income tax supporters are gearing up to counter a potential I-1929 signature gathering campaign by setting up a surveillance system to report any ballot petition signing locations. As reported by the Everett Herald: “Should I-1929 petitions get circulated, opponents won’t be sitting idly by. They set up a hotline Thursday tha...
By Elizabeth Hovde In January, understanding how misguided, poorly written and oversold taxpayers feel the state’s long-term-care law is–and after a federal, class-action lawsuit had been filed and a cease-and-desist letter had come in from Idaho–the Washington state Legislature added more exemption categories from the fund that the law created and its accompanying payroll tax of 58 cents for every $100 earned. This was in addition to an 18-month delay. Updates on the WA Cares Fund website explain that workers “who live out of state, militar...
