Junior High Girls Hoops wrap season

COLTON–The Pomeroy Junior High Girls Basketball team showed how much they improved over the season with a 27-25 win over Colton October 17. The B Squad game was won by Colton, 30-23.

“Tonight was a great way to end this Junior High Season,” said Co-Coaches Jennifer Maves and Jessica Wolf. “At the start of the season it was evident many of our girls had played very little basketball.

“This evening we were very impressed with the intensity these girls came out with,” they said. “As a team we discussed how we would need to come out ready to play. That is exactly what these girls did. They came to Colton not only ready to play, but to show them how much they improved this season.

“We are extremely proud of how hard these girls have been working since the end of August,” they said. “Each and every girl has shown improvement. We couldn’t be more proud of hard they worked.”

The leading scoring was Taylor Gilbert with 8. Cassidy Bales scored 6, Ashley Pemberton 4, Kristen Bartels 2, Hallie Brewer 2, Allyson Shaffer 2.

The B Squad trailed 30-23 at the end of the game. “The last game of the season was an exciting one,” Maves and Wolf said. “We were a little disoriented and overwhelmed coming into the game and did not play the best in the first quarter.

“However, after the first quarter we finally started playing smarter basketball and caught back up,” they said.

The B Squads first meeting with Colton was a 20-plus point loss. “To have this be a close ball game at the end of the season, shows you how far these girls have come in six weeks,” Maves and Wolf said. “Many had not EVER played basketball before turning out this year.”

The co-coaches praised their players for their hard work and improvement. “We look forward to watching these girls in the future,” they said.
