Pirates douse Eagles in rain-soaked 62-6 runaway

ST. JOHN–It was a dark and stormy night—at least it was for the St. John-Endicott-LaCrosse Eagles—as the Pomeroy Pirates pounded and slashed their way to a convincing 62-6 1B Southeast eight-main conference win.

The Pirates are tied for third with DeSales with 3-2 league records, behind 5-0 Tekoa-Rosalia and 4-0 Lyle/Wishram. The Buccaneers play Sunnyside Christian at Granger this Friday for another conference contest.

Trent Gwinn did the most damage to the Eagles, rushing for 245 yards on ten carries and four touchdowns, helping heap the team total of 497 yards of total offense. Gwinn was a favorite receiver for quarterback Brandon Bales, who hit the 5-11, 145-lb. sophomore twice for 47 yards and one touchdown through the air.

Bales packed the mail for 104 yards and three touchdowns. In addition to hitting Gwinn in the end zone, he passed for 60% (three of five) and 61 yards.

A fourth-quarter Pirate touchdown was a six-yard pass from Brodie McGill to Trevin Kimble.

Pomeroy dominated from the first quarter on, taking a 14-0 lead after 12 minutes and a 34-6 margin at halftime. SJEL trotted into the halftime pep talk after a 62-yard Dylan Campbell to Doug Stach scoring pass.

Gwinn and Bales combined for three more touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 56-6, the Brodie Magill connected with Trevin Kimble late in the contest to round out the Pirate scoring.
