Pirate passing and rushing attack too much for Sunnyside Christian

SUNNYSIDE–Pirate Quarterback Brandon Bales and running back Trent Gwinn were the one-two punch Pomeroy needed for another lop-sided 1B Southeast conference win here Friday. The Pirates manhandled the Knights 66-18, two touchdowns inside of one minute in the half pushing the game into running clock.

Homecoming week’s opponent will be Colton, with kickoff at 7 p.m. at Lybecker Field, and Homecoming activities (See front page story.).

The Pirates and DeSales are tied for third with 4-2 records in the 1B Southeast 8-man league. Undefeated Tekoa-Rosalia leads with a 5-0 record, with Lyle/Wishram/Klickitat in second with 4-0.

While Bales and Gwinn tore up the turf, the Buccaneer defense put the kibosh on the Sunnyside defense, holding the Knights to just 18 points and 173 yards of total offense.

Bales completed seven of nine throws for 168 yards and four touchdowns, plus rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns.

Gwinn pounded the opponents as the Pirate offense mixed it up. Gwinn scored the Buc’s first four touchdown, two rushing and two passing. Pass yardage was 145 and three touchdowns, and Gwinn rushed for 70 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns.

When the Sunnyside Christian defense tunneled in on Bales and Gwinn, pass receiver Devon Knuteson pulled in a nine-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

The Knights’ Matt Beltman scored two touchdowns for SSC, one a 44-yard pass from Marty Fultz, and the second a fourth-quarter two-yard plunge. Fultz had a rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

The Pirates received the first kickoff and made quick work of it, moving into Knight territory and into the red zone, where Gwinn punched in from 13 yards out. Bales slipped in the PAT for the 8-0 lead.

After stopping Sunnyside, Pomeroy advanced to the 24 yard line where Bales found his favorite receiver Gwinn for a second touchdown, 16-0.

In the final two minutes of the period, Gwinn and Bales repeated the pattern, Gwinn rushing 13 yards to pay dirt with 2:17 remaining, and Bales throwing to Gwinn for another six with 1:11 to go in the first quarter.

Sunnyside Christian answered early in the second stanza when quarterback Fultz rushed 19 yards to score.

No problem, however, as the Buccaneers came right back with Bales scoring on a two-yard run and adding the two-point conversion.

Sunnyside’s Beltman pulled in a Fultz pass for a 44-yard touchdown with two minutes to go in the half, making it 36-12.

The Pirates weren’t finished. With 27 seconds to play, Bales outmaneuvered Knight defenders, rushing 24 yards to the end zone, plus another two-point conversion.

Pomeroy got the ball back and Bales threw to Gwinn with three seconds on the clock to make it 52-12 at the half.

The second half flew by with the mercy clock running and the Pirates scoring two third-quarter touchdowns. Bales threw to Knuteson from nine yards out midway through the quarter and then Bales rushed 16 yards for the final Pirate score.

Sunnyside’s fourth-quarter touchdown was a two-yard run by Beltman making the final 66-18.
