POMEROY–Pomeroy High School Senior Alyssa Wolf, presented two checks for $1949.25 each to representatives of St. Joseph Diabetes Center and the Shriners at the morning high school assembly on December 12. The funds were raised at the annual "Beat Diabetes Basketball Tournament" held at the Pomeroy School District gyms on November 23.
Susan Rauch, representing the St. Joseph Diabetes Center, spoke with the high school students and praised them for the continued generosity shown by the community, and added that it was humbling for students to take the time to do events that benefit other children. The money received will pay for children with Type 1 Diabetes to attend summer camps specifically designed for their needs.
The camps allow the children to participate in all the fun activities that come with summer camps, with the added convenience of medical staff to assist them if needed. Parents also have peace of mind that their children will be properly cared for while at the camp.
Children aged five to eight years old attend a day camp called "Twigs" for three days, and those aged nine to 18 years old attend a whole week at "Stix." Both camps are located in Spokane. Last year's donation from the basketball tournament allowed ten children to attend the camps.
Bob Cox, President of the Pomeroy Shriners Club, said that he appreciated the donations that have been received over several years, since they began with former Pomeroy School District Superintendent Doug LaMunyan. He said that the money, which increases each year, will be used by the Shriner's organization for medical services bone and spinal cord care, and burn treatments for children.
Sponsors of the "Beat Diabetes" Basketball Tournament are LCCU, Obenland and Low, Pomeroy Grain Growers and Deadman Creek Outfitters.
LaMunyan, after leaving Pomeroy and handing over the reins for the tournament to Ryan Wolf, and then to Ryan's sister, Alyssa Wolf, still participates with the tournament as an official.
