Big third quarter for Pirates too little, too late at Oakesdale

OAKESDALE–The Pirates had no answer for Nighthawk Simon Anderson and his game-high 17 points, combining with three other Oakesdale teammates in double digits to run over Pomeroy 66-38 Friday, December 20.

Pomeroy faces Lakeland at the "Eagle Classic" tourney at West Valley H.S. in Spokane Valley this Friday. They start the new year against Genesee at home on January 3.

Everything was working for Oakesdale as the Nighthawks jetted to a 16-5 first-quarter lead, and extended it to 32-11 at halftime.

The Buccaneers responded after the halftime break with a 24-point quarter, but the Nighthawks weren't fazed too much, also scoring 15, to lead 47-35.

After cutting the lead to 12, the Pirates ran out of steam and Oakesdale finished with a 19-3 fourth quarter.

Simon Anderson led the Nighthawks with 17 and Kit Hockett and Tyler Bober each tallied 11, with Matt Hockett chipping in 10.

Byron Stallcop led Pirate scorers with 10.

As the saying goes, "when you're hot, you're hot," and for the DeSales Irish, they were hot when they visited Dec. 17. The Irish lit it up from beyond the arc in the third quarter, running away with the Southeast B conference game.

The Pirates fell behind 20-10 after the first quarter and rallied to trail by six at halftime, 30-24.

"We hung with them until about half way through the third quarter when they got hot from the three-point line," Wolf said. "They hit 14 for the game and we couldn't stay with them offensively."

Coach Wolf praised the Pirates for moving the ball better in the game, although players had trouble finishing at the hoop.

"We didn't move the ball as well from the midpoint of the third quarter on and this was when DeSales went on their run," he said. "I was very happy with our effort tonight but we need to work on our closeouts and defend the three-point line better."
