POMEROY–The Lady Pirates left no doubt in the minds of their intense rivals, the Colton Lady Wildcats, keeping their unbeaten streak going with a solid 47-20 win in the two teams' first meeting since March 2, 2019, in Spokane.
With a determined 50-36 win over Genesee here Friday, the Lady Bucs are 9-0 overall, 4-0 in league, and visited DeSales Tuesday. They play at Prescott on Friday and host the Touchet Lady Indians Saturday.
"Every girl did their job tonight [against Colton] and executed our defensive game plan to near perfection," said Head Coach Tai Bye of the 27-point win Saturday. "We controlled the pace of the game and played very disciplined. The maturity and leadership on our end of the floor tonight was strong."
Maddy Dixon dominated in the paint, scoring 24, snagging 12 rebounds, making three assists and swiping four.
Sydney Watko was another strong performer for Pomeroy, scoring seven, rebounding seven, dishing three assists and stealing four from Colton.
Keely Maves chipped in 10 points for the Lady Pirates.
Pomeroy slammed the door on Colton from the outset, bursting to a 14-6 lead after the first quarter, then struggling a bit in the second to hold an 18-15 lead at half time.
But the second half was all Pirates as they crushed the Lady 'Cats 16-4 in the third and 13-1 in the fourth for the 47-20 win.
"We've battled with this team over and over again, so to finally come out on top feels really good," Bye commented.
The non-league contest against Genesee was a good game to shake off the dust from the holiday break.
The Lady Bucs "played tired" and found themselves in foul trouble early on, according to Coach Bye, prompting adjustments to Genesee's press, and in the Pirate offensive game plan.
"We moved the ball better and handled the press with more ease in the second half," Bye said. "We absolutely gutted out a win tonight."
Dixon scored a game-high 18 points and Watko's hustle "carried our team," Bye said.
"Watko played tough defense the entire game and finished with 10 points, 12 boards, 2 steals, and 2 blocks," Bye said.
Alyssa Wolf was a strong leader on the floor, Bye noted. "I was very pleased with her voice on the floor and her defense," she said.
