Pirates split weekend games

POMEROY–The Pomeroy Pirates handed the Touchet Indians a 55-44 loss here Saturday after sustaining a defeat in Prescott the night before, falling to the Tigers 51-41.

Pomeroy is now 3-3 in Southeast 1B play, in fourth behind Prescott and Oakesdale, both tied for second with 4-1 records, and Garfield-Palouse sitting on top with a 5-0 mark.

The Pirates sail to LaCrosse for a league matchup with St. John-Endicott-LaCrosse next Saturday. On January 21, they play a non-conference game against Dayton-Waitsburg in Waitsburg.

Pomeroy used pressure and took advantage of turnovers to get an edge over Touchet Saturday.

Pomeroy outscored the Indians 10-7 in the first and were matched 12-12 for a 22-19 halftime score. But the third quarter included a spurt of scoring for the Bucs and it meant the difference.

"We were able to create turnovers tonight out of our press that led to some easy baskets," Head Coach Chris Wolf commented. "It was a very tight game at the half and we came out of halftime and went on a run. This was the difference in the game."

Gwinn's speed on some steals led to fast-break points, Wolf said. "Byron Stallcop stepped up in the second half with several offensive boards and finished very well," he said. "Evan Bartels did a nice job of finishing tonight and had 13 points."

At Prescott the night before, timing of turnovers and the inability to make put-backs played a role in the 51-41 loss.

"This was a tough game tonight," Wolf said. "We played hard but had turnovers at critical times. We got stops but gave up way too many second-chance points. Evan Bartels led us with 14 points and Trent Gwinn had 13. We missed too many opportunities to score around the basket, and were unable to make open shots."

At DeSales on January 7, the Irish exploded with a strong second half for a 64-34 win.

The Irish jumped to a 19-12 lead before the Pirates got untracked and kept up with DeSales for a 10-10 second half, trailing by seven at halftime, 29-22.

About halfway through the third, DeSales took off and coasted to the 30-point win.

"We turned it over too much and didn't rebound in the second half," Wolf said. "Danner Maves and Trent Gwinn led us with nine points."
