RITZVILLE–Three Pirate wrestlers head to the District 5-6 1B/2B South League Tournament, working to advance to the regional meet and keep the 2019-2020 season going.
Pomeroy's Curtis Winona, Braedyn White and Will Winona recently competed, along with Dayton-Waitsburg co-op wrestler Carlos Norris, at a league match in Ritzville.
Both White, in the 170 lb. class, and 138-lb. Norris won both of their matches here. Will Winona, in the 182-lb. division, pinned his Lind-Ritzville-Sprague opponent before losing by fall to a Colfax Bulldog wrestler. Curtis Winona, in the 160-lb. class, lost both matches by fall.
"Braedyn and Carlos are starting to put it all together as we get ready to head into postseason," commented Head Coach Ben Slaybaugh. "The Winona brothers have been wrestling tough against stiff competition and are improving."
White cruised through both opponents, S. Olson of LRS, and B. Rogers of Colfax, pinning both.
Norris, a Dayton-Waitsburg grappler who practices and competes with Pomeroy, made quick work of his opponents, J. Haas of Liberty, pinned at 3:27, and D. Bjornberg of Reardan, in a win by fall at 3:27.
Will Winona defeated C. Trac of LRS at the 1:20 mark, but then fell to C. Noha of Colfax at :54.
Curtis Winona was pinned at :46 by N. Sievers of Liberty, and at 2:32 by J. Cwik of Liberty.
The trio of Pirate wrestlers will be competing at Liberty High School today, February 6. Norris wrestled Wednesday, February 5, in White Swan in the Eastern Washington Athletic Conference league tournament.
In each, four top wrestlers advance. Any Pirates in the top four will wrestle at the East 1B/2B Regional in Reardan on Saturday, February 15. At that tournament, the top four advance to state in the Tacoma Dome February 21-22.
If Norris, the defending 138-lb. EWAC champion, is one of the top four wrestlers out of the EWAC tournament, he will compete in the Central 1B/2B Regional in Oroville. To advance to state, he must be in the top three.
