PALOUSE–To advance to regionals, the Pomeroy Pirates will have to win the consolation-bracket contest with Prescott on Friday, and another game Saturday. The Bucs beat SJEL 56-33 to play in to the District 9 1B tournament, but fell to Garfield-Palouse in the first round Saturday by the nearly identical score of 54-33.
The Pirates will need their "A" game Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the WWCC Dietrich Dome in Walla Walla. Prescott prevailed in both meetings this season, 51-41 on Jan. 10 and 71-53 on Jan. 31.
Prescott "will be a tough challenge as we lost both contests with them this year," said Head Coach Chris Wolf.
Wolf credited Gar-Pal's hustle and defense. "We were unable to handle their pressure and weren't able to find the holes in their defense," he said. "We struggled trying to force the ball into double teams which led to us committing 20 turnovers and we didn't get enough shots up."
"Defensively we gave up baseline too many times," Wolf said. "We just weren't able to play at their level."
Evan Bartels led Buccaneer scoring with 15. The Vikings effectively defended Gwinn, who scored eight, and Maves, who was held to four points.

The Pirates defeated St. John-Endicott-LaCrosse 56-33 in a play-off game at Colton Thursday to advance to the league tournament.
The Pirates were trailing 4-2 in the waning minutes of the first quarter when they went on a 20-2 run through the bottom of the first quarter and first 4:30 of the second quarter, helped by three pointers by Evan Bartels, Danner Maves, Trent Gwinn and Maves again. The margin held the rest of the game.
Pomeroy was helped by chilly shooting by the Eagles. Everything from bunnies to three pointers were clanking out, and Pirate rebounders were usually on the receiving end, and the Eagles committed several unforced errors-traveling and carrying the ball-to give it up to Pomeroy. SJEL's big fella Kameron Greenhalgh was a force in the key, ending the night with 17 of SJEL's 33 points.
Pirate Gwinn was the game's scoring leader with 24, and he and Maves were hot from the arc, both nailing three treys.
