elen Burke of the Senior Center here was recently elected the center's Queen for Valentine's Day. The queen is selected based on involvement at the center, participation in activities, volunteering and contributions to the center and to Pomeroy. Though she is "king-less", Burke remains an avid advocate for the center and all the fun, food, fellowship and activities offered daily.
She has been in the Pomeroy community since November of 2011 and hales from city of Lake Havasu, Arizona. She spent most of her career in life-customer service (inside sales) for a number of companies and upon retiring, she followed her son Travis and his family to Pomeroy. She has enjoyed being close to her three grandchildren and getting involved in the community.
Burke's responsibilities as president of the board is to oversee the running of the senior center. She has the help of the other board members: Vice President, Alice Gwinn; Secretary John Whitesell; Treasurer Larry Koller and Trustees Gene Smith, Ken McIntyre and Ken Rommell.
When asked how she could best promote the activities at the center, she was adamant that the community be made aware of the delicious and nutritious meals prepared Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Patsi Collins and Stephanie McKeirnan work hard to provide meals that are nutrition-compliant with government regulations, but maintain a home-cooked flavor. A weekday noon meal is big enough to take half home for an evening meal. The money earned is put back into the Senior Round Table account for all the many expenses needed for the upkeep of the building and the activities.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the pie and sandwich bar, provided by volunteers, is available to all residents of the community. Proceeds from this meal go to the Senior Center.
Come to the Center; get involved; share a meal; play pinochle, bridge, bingo, cribbage, the piano; or find a book to read. There's something for everyone.
