The two seniors worked with the local food bank, grocery store and community members to collect and disperse over 2,400 pounds of food.

Our project was to organize and execute a food drive. We accomplished this by asking for permission from Susie Bowles, the head of the Garfield County Food Bank, to run a food drive. We then asked Mark Schmitt of Pomeroy Foods to donate some grocery bags so we could drop one off along with flyers we would create at each house. Graciously he did and we went on to creating flyers to put in these bags as well as signs to hang up in local businesses where people could drop off food as well. We then set aside two weekends, one of which we dropped off bags with flyers at every house in Pomeroy and Pataha, and the next weekend in which we collected food that was set out on people’s door steps and brought it to the food bank. That food was then checked for their expiration date, and then sorted, organized, and put on the shelves. Another goal of ours was to create a Facebook page for the food bank, which we have. If you search “Garfield County Food Bank” on Facebook, you will find the page. This page will be used to share updates at the food bank as the need arises. Our Fall Food Drive brought in just over 2,400 pounds of food right before Thanksgiving, allowing for bigger boxes to be sent out for the holiday.
