POMEROY–The WIAA Executive Board voted to allow some alternate seasons for sports based on the Safe Start Phase protocols and new season descriptions recently.
Superintendent Rachel Gwinn and Athletic Directors Toddette McGreevy, Nettie Severs and Fred Knebel have reviewed and will comply with the plan set forth by the WIAA in order to bring all sports into play during the 2020-21 seasons.
"We support the WIAA in their efforts to provide all athletics for Washington's student-athletes as our state continues to be affected by Covid-19," the administrators said in a joint statement. "While the seasons might occur at different times than students, coaches, parents, and fans are used to, the plan most recently released by the Executive Board allows for all sports to occur, albeit in abbreviated seasons."
There will be seven competition weeks per sport. All schools must comply with all COVID-19 requirements, teams or individuals who do not quality for the culminating event may continue to compete or practice during the culminating event week, also referred to as "WIAA" week.
Participating districts must be in at least Phase 2 of the Safe Start mandates.
Season 1 participating sports are Cross Country and Golf which will happen during September 7–October 31. Season 2 Basketball and Wrestling are from December 28-February 27. Season 3 sports will include football, volleyball, Cross Country and Golf during the months of March 1–May 1. Season 4 includes Golf, Fastpitch Softball, Track and Field, and Baseball from April 26–June 26.
