Buccaneers scuttle Timberwolves 56-6

ROSALIA–Four second-quarter touchdowns put the game in the treasure chest for the Pirates in a 56-6 drubbing of Tekoa-Rosalia here March 3.

The Bucs played at Odessa Tuesday (story next week) and will wrap up the five-game covid season, hosting SJEL on Saturday, March 13, kickoff at 5 p.m.

"After a slow start, we turned it on in the second quarter scoring 28 points," commented Head Coach Kyle Kimble. "Trent Gwinn scored five touchdowns and Colton Slaybaugh added three scores.

"The Pirate defense was most impressive though, holding the Timberwolves to 64 yards of total offense and six points," Kimble said.

Pomeroy dominated every aspect of the game, making 23 first downs to TR's two, generating 402 total yards of offense and having the ball 30 minutes versus TR's 17. Rushing yards were 311 on 49 carries for 6.3 yards per carry. Gwinn completed six of 11 passes for 91 yards and one interception.

Noah Lamb counted five solo tackles, with Braedyn White making four plus two assists. Jesse Mings and Trace Roberts both made four solo stops, Mings counting one assist. Gwinn and Troy Steele each had two solo tackles.

Slaybaugh notched the first score in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead, then Gwinn rambled for touchdown runs of 10, two, seven and three yards in the second quarter for a 34-0 halftime score. The last two touchdowns were 31 seconds apart due to a first-down Timberwolf fumble which gave Pomeroy the ball on the ten yard line.

Ahead 34-0 at half, Tekoa-Rosalia's Anthony Ghering sparked a five-play, 50-yard drive for the T-wolves' sole score. Ghering hit Kale Stuble for 37 yards, then he turned a broken play into an 11-yard gain to the Pirate 12. He broke out for a 12-yard gain to the two, where he punched it in.

TR's onside kick was recovered on the 50 and Slaybaugh scored in two plays, a six-yard run and a 44-yard breakout to paydirt. Later in the third quarter, Noah Lamb recovered a Timberwolf fumble at the 11 and Slaybaugh wasted no time galloping into the end zone for a 48-6 margin and the running clock for the remaining 5:30 of the third and the rest of the fourth quarter.
