POMEROY––Pirate junior pole vaulter Colton Slaybaugh vaulted into first place with a 13-6 effort at the first meet of the covid track and field season held here March 31. Slaybaugh's mark put him first in state rankings among 1B schools and in second place behind a three-way tie of vaulters from west-side 4A schools.
The next meet was Wednesday, April 14 at Pomeroy followed by a District 9 1B-school meet at Colfax on Saturday, April 17. The meet returns to Pomeroy on Wednesday, April 21.
The Pirate women finished fourth with 52½ points behind SJEL, Gar-Pal, Oakesdale and Odessa. Pirate boys were third, trailing first-place SJEL and Tekoa-Rosalia.
In state standings, Logan Ledgerwood is behind Slaybaugh with a second-place standing in the pole vault with his 12-0 effort.
The boys 4X400 Relay also finished in first with a time of 4:44:04 for the team of Josh Kepner, Jayden Slusser, Nicholas Vendeland and Trevin Walton.
A trio of Pirate girls captured second-place finishes.
Haliee Brewer took second in the 100 m. dash with a time of 14.95, Katie Boyer was second in pole vault at 6-6 and Raelin Borley finished second in javelin with a throw of 81-7.
Brewer was third in the high jump at 4-4 and Borley third in shot put at 31-3½. Boyer finished fifth in the 100 m. dash.
Brewer was also sixth in the long jump (11-8), Boyer seventh in the long jump (11-4) and Borley eighth in the discus at 68-2.
For the boys, Troy Steele stood out with third-place finishes in the discus and javelin. The discus mark was 93-8 and the javelin throw 116-1. He was fourth in the shot put at 36-7½.
