POMEROY––Two undefeated teams faced off here last Saturday and when the dust settled, both teams walked away with one win and one loss.
The Pirate nine stayed even in league standings with the DeSales Irish by splitting a doubleheader last weekend, dropping the opener 15-5 but rallying to win the nightcap 16-14.
Pomeroy's record is now 8-1, 2-0 in 1B Southeast competition with doublebills at Colton and against Touchet at home to finish the covid-shortened season.
"We stayed even in the league standings," said Head Coach Dave Boyer.
Irish pitcher Ryan Chase struck out 12 while walking only one Pirate batter to start the first game, then closer Sal Sisk came in in the fifth inning and slammed the door on Pomeroy's attempts to rally.
"Pomeroy just couldn't really get going in this game," Boyer commented.
Braden Mings led the Pirates with three hits.
But, in the second game, Pirate bats came to life and the Buccaneers pulled out a 16-14 win on the strength of 17 hits.
"Any time you beat a DeSales team, it's a good day," Boyer said. "We needed the split with DeSales to stay in the race for first place in the league."
Eight Pirates stepped into the batter's box and made hits in the game, the best production of the season, Boyer said. Trevin Kimble had a three-run home run. Brodie MaGill, Trace Roberts and Trevin Kimble had three hits each.
Next week we face Colton and Touchet. Both these teams will be tough games.

The games with SJEL were played on a very windy afternoon, Boyer said. "Both games saw a ton of walks as pitchers couldn't find the strike zone. Also, a number of errors were caused by the wind.
"We scored seven runs on just two hits with 14 walks and four errors by SJEL Eagles," Boyer said. The game was stopped after 4½ innings, enough for a legal game, due to darkness.
For the day, the Pirate pitchers issued 13 walks compared to the Eagles' 33. "It was a tough day for pitchers," Boyer said.
In the first game, SJEL received 9 bases on balls and Pomeroy 19. In the second, Pomeroy pitchers counted 11 strikeouts. SJEL received 4 walks and Pomeroy 14
