Bucs finish first, headed to one-day league tourney

POMEROY––The hard-hitting Pirates clinched the top spot in the league with wins over Touchet and Colton, including a seventh-inning rally to sweep the Wildcats. The Pirates boast a 11-1 record with a final nonleague matchup with Asotin on Saturday.

On May 4 in Walla Walla, Pomeroy will play the number four team and the number two will play number three. Winners of both games will play for the District championship.

Two home runs in one game highlighted as Pomeroy swept Touchet 17-2 and 18-6 here Saturday and downed Colton 22-4 and 12-8 in the game they rallied to win.

The Bucs jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third, but the Wildcats tied it with three runs. Their next at-bat, they added five so going into the seventh, the Pirates were behind 8-4.

"Before we went up to hit," said Head Coach Dave Boyer, "we talked about it. 'Have we been lucky this season to win when we needed to, or are we good and we won because we're a good team?'

"So they went up and produced eight runs," Boyer said. But the Wildcats had another at-bat.

In the bottom of the seventh, the first two Colton batters reached base and were in scoring position at third and second. Catcher Trevin Kimble was watching the third-base runner and noticed he was too far off third. After a pitch, Kimble picked the runner off with a quick whip to third.

Then the second-base runner tried to steal third, and Kimble threw him out at third. Pitcher Braden Mings struck out the batter to end the game.

"It was a real great come-back win," Boyer said.
