POMEROY––The Pirates opened the season with a down-to-the-wire loss to the Garfield-Palouse Vikings, then rebounded with a come-back win over the Touchet Indians to tip off the 2021 covid season with a win and a loss.
Pomeroy’s basketball season will be a quick one. The Pirates took on Colton last Monday at home, visited Liberty Christian on Tuesday, practiced Wednesday and traveled to Sunnyside Christian on Thursday, May 20. Monday, May 24, the Pirates hosted Oakesdale, with Yakama Nation coming to town for Senior Night, Tuesday, May 25. The season wraps with an away game at DeSales on Thursday, May 27.
Pomeroy lost a squeaker to Gar-Pal, 45-40, going into the final minute knotted 40-40.
Trent Gwinn scored to give the Pirates a 38-37 lead, but GP responded with a three pointer to a 40-38 margin. A bucket by Tyson Kimble shored up the difference to 40 all.
The final minute was tense as the Pirates were called for a couple fouls, but Viking free-throw shooters couldn’t hit.
The Vikings edged ahead with a bucket and Pomeroy took a time out with about a half minute to play.
Kimble was whistled for a foul and GP added one point for a 43-40 lead. At about 16 seconds, Gwinn made his fifth foul. The shooter missed both shots but snagged the rebound.
The next two gifters fell and the game clock wound down with the final 45-40.
Against Touchet, the Indians jumped to a 13-8 lead after the first quarter, and went into the half ahead 24-21.
But the Pirates came out with cannon blazing in the third quarter, rampaging with a 32-7 third-quarter drubbing and a 53-31 lead before coasting to an 11-11 lash-up in the fourth quarter and a 64-42 final.
