Pomeroy parents and grandparents Janie Field front right, Greg Lamb right, Jim Borley back right, Frank Byrd, Jon Borley, Margie Byrd, Autumn Borley rear center, Stephanie Steynor, front center, Dot Wessels, Ann Blachly, Tasha Wessels, Mary Morgan rear left, and Margo Morgan front left came together to brainstorm options that will benefit young people.
POMEROY–Concerned parents and grandparents of local children attended an Unmask Pomeroy Kids meeting at the City Park on August 18.
The concern was about Washington State mandates that require children to wear masks in schools.
Margo Morgan, organizer of the meeting, handed out scientific evidence of the harm that wearing masks does to children. "The goal of the meeting is to get a number of residents who want to take this farther, to get the masks off these kids," Morgan said.
Unmask Our Kids is a statewide rally in Washington, but Morgan stated her decision to organize a meeting rather than a rally was based on what she felt Pomeroy needed. She stated her belief that Pomeroy needed to talk about solutions rather than wave signs.
The attendees discussed possible alternative schooling options, including a homeschool co-op as well as personal homeschooling opportunities and curriculums. Several people expressed their support for the teachers and love for the school alongside their unease with the mandate. "We love our school and our teachers," Janie Field said. Her statement was endorsed by several others at the meeting.
"We hate that they're making us choose," Hayden Petty said.
The atmosphere of the meeting was calm and logical. The attendees remained seated and no voices were raised. The overall focus was on expressing a shared concern and brainstorming possible solutions.
