Pirates shut out at Tekoa-Rosalia

TEKOA–The Pirates blew to the running clock by 7:24 in the second quarter, dominating the Tekoa-Rosalia Timberwolves with not only a shut out, but also holding their hosts to 43 yards of total offense in this season's first league contest.

The Touchet Indians come to town this Friday for a 7 p.m. kick off against the 4-0 Pirates.

"Our boys came to play this afternoon," commented Head Coach Kyle Kimble. "I was thrilled with our relentless, physical, and fast play, especially on defense. Holding a team scoreless in eight-man football is very difficult and holding them under 50 yards of total offense is even tougher."

The Pirates tallied 472 yards of total offense to TR's 43. Pomeroy's 163-yard passing game kept the Timberwolves off balance with four different players throwing the ball.

"We were able to throw the ball more effectively than we typically do and we had some great success with the passing game," Kimble added. "We didn't complete many passes but the ones we completed were big plays. Additionally, we got a lot of guys touches this afternoon which will pay off later this season.

The running game counted for 309 yards for an average of 12.9 yards per carry.

Trent Gwinn was again an offensive force for the Pirates, rushing for three touchdowns, catching a Sidney Bales pass for another and punching in one point after. He completed four of six passes for 80 yards. On defense, Gwinn was the second-highest tackler with four solos and one assist.

Bales opened the game's scoring with a 21-yard touchdown pass reception from Gwinn a minute and a quarter into the first quarter. In the third quarter, he made it 62-0 with a 40-yard scoring run.

The Buc's defense stood out as it stifled any Timberwolf offensive attempts and capitalized on TR turnover, falling on their one fumble and interceptions by Braden Mings and Jett Slusser. TR's 43 total offense in 39 plays made 1.1 yards per play and included 17 yards through the air and 26 rushing. They were plague by motion penalties.

The Pirates opened the second half with Bales's 40-yard touchdown scamper then turned the game over to younger players. Junior quarterback Brodie Magill ran in from the Timberwolf 35 with Slaybaugh punching in the PAT, then Jett Slusser, freshman quarterback, connected with sophomore Ollie Severs for a 32-yard scoring strike with six minutes remaining in the game.
