Middle School Pirate Girls working hard to improve

POMEROY––Colfax beat the Middle School Girls Basketball team 38-14 October 7. The B Team was blanked 15-0.

Carmen Fruh hit a pair of three pointers to lead scorers with six. Kendyll Potoshnik made two and Grace Hart four.

“I was very proud of the A Team tonight,” said Coach Jessica Wolf. “They came out ready to play. They were very focused. Before the game we talked about not giving up. I am proud to say everyone kept working hard.”

“They were a tough team to go against,” said Sadie Klaveano. “I was proud of how we played.”

The team fell to All Saints of Lewiston 35-20 here October 4. The Jayvees also lost, 20-13.

“Our focus this game was being precise whether it be rebounding, running the offense, or playing offense or defense,” commented B Coach Jennifer Maves. “Our shots were not falling this game but the girls never gave up. We will continue to work hard and improve our game.

“We play this team one more time by the end of the season and I think the game will have a different outcome,” said Maves.

In the first meeting of the A team with All Saints, Caroline McKeirnan and Kendyll Potoshnik each scored 6 points, Carmen Fruh 3, Carolina Morfin 2, Olivia Cooper 2, Grace Hart 1. Sadie Klaveano also played.

The B Team loss to All Saints of 20-13 was against a team coached by Pomeroy alum Nikki Halbert, Maves said.

“I was very impressed with our girls,” Maves said. “The first time we played them, All Saints definitely dominated the floor. We came out with a slow first half but turned it up in the third and fourth quarters. The girls played with intensity, worked hard and never gave up. Our focus for this game was rebounding and shooting the ball.”

Scoring: Hollie Van Vogt 7, Kylee Wegerzyn 2, Bethany Zimmermann 2, Reagan McKeirnan 2, Ariah Bingman, Heather Hastings, Lilly Weatherspoon.

Brock Ledgerwood and Trevin Kimble were appreciated for officiating the game. There is an official shortage due to Covid and the game may have been canceled except for Ledgerwood’s and Kimble’s volunteering to serve as referees.
