An Even 100 Years
SUNNYSIDE–The Pomeroy Pirates are the undisputed champions of the Southeast B-1 8-Man Conference, finishing the season 10-0 overall, 7-0 in conference, an even 100 years since the 1921 P.H.S. Pirates went undefeated, and 51 years since the 1970 Pirates were undefeated and untied.
The show-down with the 8-1 Sunnyside Christian Knights last week was played against a steady breeze blowing straight down field and it didn't hamper the Pirates one iota. Receiving the opening kickoff and facing into the wind, Pomeroy scored three touchdowns to take a 24-0 first-quarter lead and hit the cruise control to finish 58-0.
The Pirates get a bye this coming weekend then will face the winner in the first-round playoffs, either Waterville-Manson or Naselle, to be played at a neutral site nearest the top seed.
"This was the ultimate way to finish out the regular season by beating a quality opponent on their field before heading into the playoffs," Head Coach Kyle Kimble said.
Pomeroy chalked up 252 yards of offense and Pirate D held SSC to -6 yards of offense, minus one passing and minus five on the ground.
Trent Gwinn threw three touchdown passes to Trevin Kimble, one into the wind in the first quarter and two with it in the second, completing five of six for 91 yards. He rushed for 108 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns, plus he ran an interception unscathed into the end zone.
Colton Slaybaugh punched in Pomeroy's second touchdown from the 11 on fourth and seven, plus was a good counterpoint to the Knight defense focusing on Gwinn. Braedon Fruh and Sid Bales also packed the ball for gains.
Braedyn White led defenders with four solo tackles, two assists and a sack. Gwinn had three solos, and Walker Flynn, Trevin Kimble and Jett Slusser each had two. Ollie Severs, Fruh, Boone Schmidt, Slaybaugh and Trace Roberts all notched a single solo tackle.
Pomeroy elected to receive and started on the Knight 42 after an eight-yard Severs return facing into the brisk breeze. Bales rushed for nine yards, then Gwinn got loose for a 33-yard scamper with 11:23 on the clock. Gwinn made the two-point conversion.
The next touchdown was an 11-yard run by Slaybaugh and the third was Gwinn throwing to Kimble for a 15-yard score, with the quarter ending and Pomeroy having the wind at their backs.
Slaybaugh intercepted SSC and, on second and nine, Gwinn ran it in from 19 yards, 32-0. Gwinn threw to Kimble with the wind to his back for a 37-yard touchdown on third and eight, making it 40-0 and starting the running clock at 8:26 in the second period.
Gwinn's kick sailed into the end zone and SSC went three and out, punting into the wind. Kimble pulled in the Gwinn pass on fourth and goal from the eight, capping the seven-play drive. The teams went into half with the score 46-0.
Further slamming the door on Sunnyside Christian was Kimble, who intercepted a Knight pass at the 34-yard line and returned it for six. The PAT was a broken play, the score now 52-0.
The Knights again tried to pass but Gwinn intercepted and ran it back from the 40.
With the running clock, substitutions played the final quarter without scoring and grinding without much movement at around the 35 yard line.
