Pataha Flour Mill will hold its annual “Christmas with the Sheriff (Retired)” program Saturday Dec. 17. Former Sheriff Larry Bowles will sing favorite Christmas songs, accompanied by his mother Juyne Bowles on the mill’s organ and other members of the family.

For the second consecutive year, Pomeroy Chamber of Commerce’s entry in Clarkston’s Lighted Christmas Parade won top placing in the “True Christmas Spirit” category.

Twenty-five years ago

December 18, 1996

Pomeroy Police are looking for the person or persons involved in a rash of vandalism against residential Christmas decorations Friday night or early Saturday morning. According to reports made to the police, there were four incidents over that time span, Police Chief Dave Boyer said. The vandalism ranged from removing Christmas bulbs to cutting through strings of lights and garland, and destruction of metal decorative figures.

Pomeroy High School senior Danika Gwinn was elected the District VI FFA president for 1996-7 at the fall district meeting last month.

Fifty years ago

December 16, 1971

Jim Storey and Richard Hill of OK Tire Store report they have received 75 to 100 replies from the Studded Tire user questionnaire in the East Washingtonian. The questionnaire is being circulated by the Northwest Tire Dealers Association in Sedro Woolley, Wash. Most said they would not be without studded tires in the winter, and are against legislation outlawing studs.

Seventy-five years ago

December 19, 1946

On Monday morning of this week a new organization known as the school boy patrol appeared on the streets around the grade and high school. Since all the buses now load on the street adjoining the grade school a considerable hazard is created when traffic attempts to pass through that street as the buses are backing out in an attempt to get started. The patrol will stop the traffic through that street for a distance of one block for about 10 minutes at four o’clock while the buses are being loaded.

Washington State’s R.O.T.C. rifle team downed Ohio State University, 1835 to 1769, in a postal match which opened the Cougars’ competitive year. Wilbur Gingerich, Pomeroy, was the high scorer in the opening victory.

One hundred years ago

December 17, 1921

A complete still of 20-gallon capacity, 40 gallons of mash and a gallon of moonshine were taken by deputy sheriffs E.E. Powell and Len Jennings Monday, on an island in the Snake River near Almota ferry. The apparatus consisted of a copper boiler heated by a two-burner oil stove and a tin worm with a water jacket cooling device. The mash was destroyed and the still brought to the courthouse in Pomeroy. The alleged owners of the still, Ed Regan and Joseph Smith, pled guilty to the charge of manufacturing liquor, in Justice court before Judge Thompson Tuesday and were each fined $250 and costs.

The total collections for fishing and hunting licenses issued by the county auditor this year for state and county, were $1,074. Of this amount $195 came from purchasers of state licenses and the rest from purchasers of licenses for one or more counties.

One hundred twenty-five years ago

December 19, 1896

Somebody writes that there will be a “coyote chase” on Pataha the 27th inst., the crowd to meet at George Montgomery’s. But, as no name accompanies the item, and as it is against the rules of all well-regulated newspapers to publish anonymous communications, we won’t say anything about it.

Born, to the wife of M.N. Jeffreys, our mail carrier, Dec. 14, a 11-pound boy. Immediately after his return from Pomeroy, Doc was greatly excited. He came to the post office, but didn’t delay long – skipped as though the Sheriff was after him.
