January 29, 1997

Installation of the new dispatch console at the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office completed the building renovation portion for implementation of the E-911 system.

Though it’s usually seen going to and from the Senior Center and is known as the “Senior Van,” the 1987 Dodge van is actually a Garfield County resource, says Jan Zorb at the Senior Center in Pomeroy. Zorb and other officials would like to see the vehicle used more by residents with special transportation needs.

Fifty years ago

January 27, 1972

Coni Wolf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wolf, has been named to the All-State Chorus, and will sing in the 400-member chorus at the Convention of Music Educators at Vancouver.

An addition to Garfield County Memorial Hospital is presently in the planning stages, but could become a reality this year, Administrator Jim McNeil said. The 1,300 square foot addition of the southwest corner of the hospital along 6th Street, together with 600 square feet of remodeling, has been designed and will provide the hospital with a needed waiting room, a conference room, lavatories for visitors, clean utility room, and enlarged nurses station, business office, laboratory and drug rooms.

Seventy-five years ago

January 30, 1947

Schaefer’s, a new business firm, featuring fountain service, short orders and Shaefer’s ice cream, will open for business Saturday in the post office building in the room formerly occupied by the Pomeroy Grain Growers. The owner of the establishment is James Schaefer, a Pomeroy-reared boy, who served four years in the Coast Guard, mostly in Alaskan waters.

Union Pacific engine No. 1747, weighing 161,000 pounds on the drovers, had its six drive wheels thrown off the rails Monday afternoon at six o’clock while switching cars into the Potlatch, Tum-a-Lum and Robinson warehouse siding. The derailment was attributed to a broken rail. Engine No. 1747, an oil burner, is a much heavier locomotive than is usually run over the Starbuck-Pomeroy branch of the Union Pacific system.

One hundred years ago

January 28, 1922

O.D. Nicholson returned from Dodge camp this week and reports three feet of snow. Nicholson tried to cross the mountains to the Grouse country, but on account of the deep snow, could not make it. One of his horses gave out and had to be killed.

Mayor C.E. Kuykendall says all money received has been applied to up-keep and improvements of the water system. “In the past the city has paid money out of the water fund at different times to meet other expenses, but in every case the fund has been reimbursed to the full amount of each sum thus diverted.”
