Lady Pirates third into district

POMEROY––Three games in four days wrapped up the home stretch of the 2021-22 season (save the Feb. 7 Senior Night game versus Colton), with the Lady Pirates (13-4, 6-3) winning one and losing two, and with their sites set on the opening game of the District Tournament February 9 at Sunnyside Christian.

Pomeroy lost to SSC 46-26 at home Saturday, beat Tekoa-Rosalia Friday by 50-24, and lost at Oakesale Feb. 2 by 42-35.

The Lady Pirates landed in third, and the playoff game in Sunnyside tipped off at 6 p.m. Wed., Feb. 9. The next game would be Friday, Feb. 11 against either No. 4 Liberty Christian or No. 1 Gar-Pal, at the home of the highest seed, in either the winner’s or consolation bracket.

The third round will be 5 p.m. Feb. 18 in Dayton if in the winner’s bracket, or 3:15 p.m. Feb. 16 in Dayton, if in the consolation bracket. Winner of the championship game is No. 1 to state, loser is No. 2, and the winner of the consolation bracket, played at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19 in Dayton, is No. 3 to state.

Pomeroy struggled against Sunnyside Christian, scoring single digits before picking it up in the fourth quarter. “It wasn’t our night for basketball,” said Coach Tai Bye.

Keely Maves scored eight and rebounded six, and Jillian Herres scored seven, had six assists and three boards.

Chase Caruso bombed TR with four three pointers for a game-high 18 points, with Maves knocking down 17 points as Pomeroy downed TR 50-24 Feb. 4.

“We moved the ball the really well tonight and got a lot of open looks on the outside that Caruso was able to connect with,” Bye said.

Versus Oakesdale, a cold third quarter and foul trouble added up to the seven-point difference, a 42-35 loss. “We had a tough third quarter with cold shooting and foul calls, so we weren’t able to cut the deficit at the end,” Bye said.

Maves finished with 12 points and three boards despite being in foul trouble the entire night. Herres was strong with 14 points and 4 assists.
