POMEROY––Student-athletes from Pomeroy High School's girls and boys basketball and wrestling programs are anticipating District tournaments and Regional wrestling matches-all with the goal of reaching the state tournament.
In an unusual twist of fate, both girls and boys Pirate basketball teams finished this tumultuous basketball season-made so by frequent schedule changes caused by covid eruptions at schools across the 1B league-in the third seed into their respective District tournament brackets. Not only that, but Sunnyside Christian's respective girls and boys teams also landed in the number two seed in the bracket. So the opening round finds the Lady Pirates traveling to higher-seed SSC on Wednesday, February 9, and the Pirate boys repeating the following day, February 10, for their opening-round game.
On the wrestling mat, there are three Pirate grapplers advancing out of the District 7/9 tournament last week to the WIAA 1B/2B Region 2 tournament, to be held in Warden this Saturday, February 12.
They are 145-lb. wrestler Walker Flynn, 170-lb. Curtis Winona and 182-lb. Braedyn White. Each must finish in the top five to attain a berth in the state tournament Feb. 18-19 in Tacoma.
