Pirate wrestlers headed to Regionals

POMEROY––Three Pirate wrestlers will compete this weekend for a berth in the WIAA Mat Classic XXXIII in Tacoma Feb. 18-19. The WIAA 1B/2B Region 2 match starts at 10 a.m. in Warden.

Representing Pomeroy will be 145-lb. sophomore Walker Flynn, 170-lb. sophomore Curtis Winona and 182-lb. senior Braedyn White.

Flynn has a 3-1 record and finished second at the 1B/2B District 7/9 tournament.

White finished third in the recent district tournament to advance. He has a 4-1 record.

Curtis Winona, a sophomore, holds a 3-2 record and finished fifth to advance.

The top five from this meet move on.

Wrestling took a two-week break to give wrestlers time and distance from covid, said Fred Knebel, A.D. for wrestling. The resulting “super regional” matches, one for the east half of the state, the other for the west, will be held this weekend. “It’s going to be harder to get to state,” Knebel said.
