PALOUSE–Pomeroy's Lady Pirates are in the consolation bracket, in a battle to stay alive and set to play DeSales in a loser-out game Wednesday following their second-round loss to Garfield-Palouse by 45-16 her Friday, Feb. 11.
"We had a really hard time getting things in movement," said Head Coach Tai Bye after the loss to Gar-Pal.
"We really struggled to get a shot to fall, especially in the first half, and our defense can only hold on so long before the deficit becomes too great for us to remain in the game," she said. "We needed to take care of the ball better and we needed to put points on the board, but we just couldn't find our rhythm."
The Lady Pirates finished the first frustrating, pressure-filled eight minutes with just two points as the Lady Viking defense worked at keeping Pomeroy's usual scorers off balance. Rather than rally and recover, Pomeroy only scored two in the second quarter and trailed by the steep climb of 18-4.
The second half wasn't much better for the Lady Pirates, who struggled to finish while Gar-Pal, comfortable on their home court, consistently scored.
Maves finished with 7 points and Herres finished with three points, 10 boards and three assists.
At Sunnyside Christian on Feb. 9, Pomeroy prevailed in a defensive showdown.
"I am so proud of how my girls responded after a tough, emotional week," Bye said. "They came out with something to prove.
"Our defense was on fire tonight," she said. "Chase Caruso contained Candenoza, only allowing her to score four points."
Maves led with 18 points and eight rebounds, and hit crucial buckets for the team, Bye said.
On Senior Night Feb. 7, foul trouble plagued the team with low offense in the second and third quarters, and when Pirate defenders effectively shut down Colton's inside game, the Lady Wildcats hit from outside.
"We played a tough first half, but we keep finding ourselves in foul trouble and we have a hard time making up the difference when we can get our starters back on the floor," Bye said.
"Keely Maves and Elizabeth Ruchert played their final game on their home court tonight, and both played a tough game, she said. "Keely Maves finished with 21 points and 15 boards. Elizabeth finished with four points and five boards.
