The public is invited to a program about the American West, featuring Nevada Slim and Cimarron Sue, is sponsored by Humanities Washington through its state-wide Speakers Bureau. The theme of the series is “Lasso Our Heritage: Cowboys and Cowgirls in Story and Song”.

Pomeroy Chamber of Commerce recognized the achievements and efforts of three organizations at the annual awards banquet Saturday at Spinners Maple Hall.

Twenty-five years ago

Superintendent Terry Brandon is pleased with the progress of the elementary school remodeling project that is now in the design development stage. “Things are going well,” he said. If plans receive approval as expected, request for bids could go out sometime in July. District voters approved a $3.25 million bond in May, 1996, for remodeling at the four-decade old school building that will revamp heating and cooling, and enlarge the library and gym.

The winners of the Windy Cool Rod competition at Pomeroy Elementary School last week Friday advanced to yesterday’s district competition. Elementary winners are Monica Bartlow, Brycen Bye, Brooke Kelly, Mike Mensik, Jake Fischer, Todd Keatts, Heidi Mensik, and Jordan Beale. Junior High winners are Jeff Greene and Stephanie Bartlow.

Fifty years ago

March 9, 1972

Workmen have been busy taking down the Pomeroy Seeds grass seed cleaning plant in East Pomeroy which recently closed its doors. The plant will be reconstructed at Tilma, near Tekoa, Wash. Pomeroy Seed Company opened in 1961, but its principal operation in recent years has been at Fairfield. Last fall the office at Pomeroy closed, but no decision was announced at that time to close the plant here. The main office had been moved to Fairfield for some time earlier. Work has been under way for over three weeks. Dismantling of the building started about two weeks ago.

Elton Brown led rifle shooters with a 379 in the tenth and final week of Inland Empire competition shooting at the Pomeroy Gun and Rifle Club range near Pataha. Other shooters were Gary Cole, 371, Ray Beale 370, and Ernie Tidwell 355.

Seventy-five years ago

March 13, 1947

Eugene Leaverton, who was graduated from the Pomeroy high school in 1946, and soon thereafter voluntarily joined the armed forces, is today one of 132 American boys, members of the military police, guarding the courtroom in Tokyo, Japan, where former Premier Hideki Tojo and 24 other Japanese war criminals are being tried for their lives.

John A. Dye, a prominent Garfield County farmer Tuesday closed a deal for a 2130-acre tract of land 12 miles northwest of Pomeroy, purchasing the land from Charles C. Finicane, of Spokane, at reported consideration of $124,000. In the acreage are 1600 acres of plow land, the remainder being pasture land. The land for many years was farmed by George Lawson being, however, at the present time leased to H.T. Boyd who will continue to operate the farm, one of the largest in the county.

One hundred years ago

March 11, 1922

Mrs. W.E. Graham secured the first prize in the Kuykendall Drug Store word contest, which closed last week. She had arranged 3,350 words from the letters forming the name “Kuykendall’s Drug Store.” Mrs. John Knowles secured the second prize with 3,137 words; C.E. Hull third, 2,999 words. One-dollar prizes were awarded to Margaret Westling, Mrs. C.C. Francisco, Dan Messenger and Mildred Beale.

The Boy Scouts went on a 10-mile hike up the Pataha Sunday under command of J.L. Elsensohn and A.L. Tefft.
