Bucs split double bill with Wildcats

COLTON–The Pirates got the bat on the ball plenty, but the Colton Wildcats were in the right place at the right time and made the right plays, and leveraged a single run into a win in a classic pitching duel between Pirate Trevin Kimble and Wildcat Angus Jordan. In the nightcap, Pomeroy ten-runned Colton 14-2.

The 6-6 Pirates head to Touchet for a double-header on April 30, then host Sunnyside Christian May 3.

“It was a tough, defensive game the whole way,” commented Head Coach Kyler Lovgren. “We were able to hit the ball, but Colton made the plays every time.”

“Kimble pitched a great game,” Lovgren said, “only giving up one hit and he rung up nine batters with strikeouts. We couldn’t have asked for any more out of him than that.”

Colton’s Kane Weiker clubbed the team’s sole hit while a handful of Buccaneers rapped the bats.

In the second game, hurler Trace Roberts was “merciless,” Lovgren said. “Trace was merciless on the mound with 10 strikeouts over five innings,” the coach said.

The Pirate ripped nine hits and were prolific getting on base. “We hit the ball well in this game and were able to find a few more gaps,” Lovgren said.

“We had a few guys that did a great job just finding a way on base,” he added. “Brodie Magill was five for five getting on base with one hit, one Hit By Pitch and three walks. When your lead-off guy has an on-base percentage (OBP) of 1000, good things happen.”
