May 11-17 declared National Police Week

POMEROY-The Garfield County board of commissioners (BOCC) declared National Police Week, plans to vacate a section of county road right-of-way, and appointed Board of Equalization member at their meeting on May 9.

President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962, and National Police Week as the week May 15 falls within. The BOCC declared that Garfield County will observe both the week and the Memorial Day, set aside for law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Since 1786, more than 23,000 US law enforcement officers qualify for this memorial.

A two acre section of right-of-way on Dutch Flat Road has been deemed unnecessary to the road and will be vacated. According to policy, landowners whose property is adjacent to the vacated land can take possession. In this instance, Nick and Reggie Waldher both own property adjacent to the section.

Two committees on the proposed sales tax to be put on the August ballot will be formed, one for and one against. Each will consist of one to three people and will create statements to be placed on the voter’s pamphlet to accompany the ballot.

The BOCC agreed to draft a letter of support to the Washington State County Road Administration Board endorsing Ron Weeks for the nomination of 2022 Project Program Manager. The board also voted to appoint Vonni Mulrony to the Board of Equalization.

The BOCC also passed Resolution 2022-15, which continues a county policy of preserving survey monuments during pavement preservation treatment projects.
