Bill Cox wins Fairgrounds hay bid

POMEROY––The Garfield County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) opened bids for hay and heard of advisory committee vacancies from the United States Department of Agriculture on June 6.

The BOCC opened bids for the barley hay crop currently growing at the Garfield County Fairgrounds. The winning bid was $175 a ton from Bill Cox.

The USDA sent a letter to the BOCC announcing that the Southeast Washington Resource Advisory Committee is seeking members. The committee makes recommendations on land management projects involving watersheds, roads, and facilities on or adjacent to the Umatilla National Forest, as well as overall forest health. Anyone interested in joining can contact the commissioners or United States Forest Service District Ranger Susan Piper.

At the May 31 meeting, the closure of the Auditor’s office, the County Road Crew’s budget, and reviewed the Zoning Ordinance were topics. This meeting was held after the East Washingtonian’s press deadline due to the Memorial Day holiday.

The Auditor’s office had been closed due to illness until further notice, and Commissioners were advised that business such as physical paperwork can be conducted through the Treasurer’s office.

County Engineer Grant Morgan and Crew Chief Rod Norland discussed the County Road Crew’s 2022 budget with the BOCC. Spending is on track to finish the year within budget. Crew Chief Norland mentioned the projects that he has planned for the summer. “The crew will be busy,” he said.

The commissioners expressed concern over the response of any person who has seen a wild predator near the community. “If you see one in or near the community, call the Sheriff’s office,” Commissioner Justin Dixon said.

The BOCC also reviewed the Zoning Ordinance with their planning associate, Don Brigham of Clarkston. The Ordinance lists what type of buildings are allowed in each zone of Garfield County and why, and is quite lengthy. The Ordinance is available on the Garfield County website.
