POMEROY––Rebounding and sticky defense were lacking in the Pomeroy Pirates' 55-44 loss to Dayton-Waitsburg here December 29 as the visiting Wolfpack took advantage in the final minutes and scored in the end game while shutting the Pirates out.
The Pirates, 3-3 overall, 2-1 league, welcome visiting Tekoa-Rosalia Friday on the home maple, then hit the road to DeSales for a non-league contest Saturday, and travel to Touchet Tuesday, Jan. 10.
"Dayton-Waitsburg took it to us all night," commented Head Coach Chris Wolf. "They played harder from start to finish."
Wolf was displeased with Pirate rebounding and defensive efforts, and it wasn't Pomeroy's night offensively: missing easy buckets.
"We had 18 turnovers tonight that led to many easy transition baskets for DW," Wolf said. "Ollie Severs was a bright spot tonight with 19 points and seven rebounds. Brady Bott played well off the bench with six points and solid defense tonight."
Wolf said the team is capable of playing better and having a good season, but there is much work ahead for that to occur.
Both teams battled within a few points of each other through the entire game until the final minute and a half, when the Pirates went cold and DW played effective end-game basketball.
The Wolfpack led 15-11 at the first quarter, 25-24 at halftime and 35-34 after three periods. The Pirates were within five points after a pair of Severs baskets, 49-44, with two minutes to play.
DW dominated the boards, forcing Pirate fouls, and Wolfpack free throws ticked up the points for DW.
