Cannon has good day at Colfax match

COLFAX–Pirate wrestler Peyton Cannon rallied to win two of three matches at an All-League Meet here January 5.

The Pirate Girls' Team journeyed to Newport for a girls-only competition Jan. 10, and tonight, Jan. 12, Pomeroy competes in Davenport at League Meet No. 2. Saturday the action is the Crusader Classic at Colbert, and next Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Pirate girls wrestle at Mead in Spokane.

"Peyton looked tough, going 2-1 on the night," commented Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh. One-hundred sixty-pound Cannon was pinned in the first match by McLaughlin of Reardan, then he defeated Ashmoore of Liberty and Pops of Northwest Christian to go two out of three at the match.

Curtis Winona, competing in the 182-lb class, went up against Cwik of Liberty, one of Washington's top wrestlers.

"Curtis Winona wrestled one of the top competitors in the state at his weight," Slaybaugh said, "but lost by decision after a tough battle."

Slaybaugh then prevailed in a decision over Gustaveson of Davenport, then was felled by Smith of Lind-Ritzville-Sprague.

At 195 lbs., Nick Hastings was pinned by Roberts of Liberty, won by fall over Mendoza of Reardan then fell to Durbin of Reardan in the third match.

"Nick is wrestling hard and doing a lot of good things but finished the night 1-2," Slaybaugh said.
